David Olon Vandiver, known affectionately as Dave and grandpa by his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, in Burnet, Texas. Born on August 20, 1943, in Modesto, California, Dave's journey through life was marked by his unwavering courage, sharp intelligence, and an unforgettable sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew him.
Dave's early life in Texas laid the foundation for a man who would later serve his country with distinction. After completing his education with a focus on Military Intelligence, he dedicated 23 years of his life to the United States Army, completing three tours in Vietnam. His service was recognized with numerous awards, and he was honorably discharged, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and commitment to his fellow soldiers and nation.
Following his military career, Dave continued to serve his community through his work with the San Antonio Express News. His colleagues there, as in every walk of his life, were touched by his infectious laughter and his ability to make every individual feel like a friend. Dave never met a stranger, and his presence was a source of light and warmth in the workplace.
At home, Dave was a beloved husband to his wife, Carolina, and a cherished father to his daughter, Iliana Lopez, affectionately known as "baby cakes," and her partner, Richard. He adored his grandson, Paxton-Anthony, whom he fondly called "Punky," and his granddaughter, Autumn Paige, and her husband, Jacob. Dave's role as a family man was paramount, and he instilled in his family the values of love, humor, and resilience.
An avid outdoorsman, Dave found solace and excitement in hunting, fishing, and reloading ammunition. His collection of knives was a testament to his appreciation for craftsmanship and the outdoors. The shooting range was a place where he honed his skills and shared his knowledge with others. Moreover, Dave cherished the moments spent on cruises with his wife and grandson, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Dave's interests extended to the simple pleasure of being with his family. Whether it was a quiet evening at home or a lively family gathering, he was happiest when surrounded by his loved ones. His laughter was contagious, his stories captivating, and his wisdom profound.
To describe Dave as funny, intelligent, and courageous barely scratches the surface of a man whose life was a tapestry of service, love, and laughter. He was a beacon of light in the lives of those who knew him, and his legacy will continue to shine brightly through the memories he leaves behind.
David Olon Vandiver's life was a journey of joy, service, and love. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. Dave's spirit will forever be a guiding force in the lives of his family and friends. His story is not one of sorrow, but of a life well-lived and well-loved. Rest in peace, dear Dave, until we meet again.
