David Allen VanDyke, 69, a resident of the Aloha community passed away on May 17, 2023 in his home.
David was born on December 9, 1953 in Renton, WA. He was the oldest of six children born to Arthur "Art" and Shirley (Jungwirth) VanDyke. He moved as a child with his family and settled in Hillsboro. He attended Hillsboro High School and graduated with the Class of 1972. David was a very active child growing up. Not only was he the oldest of his siblings he also helped his family helping in many part time jobs. As a volunteer at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Hillsboro he played guitar in the folk choir. In September of 1972, at age 17, David was involved in a traffic accident that left him disabled.
Since then David was a source of love and companionship to family and friends. He lived with his parents for 5 years after his accident then moved to the Edwards Group Home in Aloha. Here David found a supportive community where he thrived and lived the rest of his life. He was involved in summer camps, arts and crafts and trips to the beach. David was a very thoughtful and loving listener. He was a diehard Star Trek fan and could quote many lines from the shows many episodes.
He is preceded in death by his father, Art.
He is survived by his mother Shirley VanDyke of Hillsboro, 5 siblings and their spouses, Nancy VanDyke of Hillsboro, John and Trina VanDyke of Arizona, Steven and Diane VanDyke of Bend, Andy and Lisa VanDyke of Hillsboro, Bryan and Tera VanDyke of North Plains, 6 nieces and nephews and 5 great nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
