David W. Varone, a beloved father, partner, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, after a courageous four-month battle with heart-related illness. His heart, as many would say, was simply too big and beautiful for this world.

Born in Reading Pennsylvania and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, David attended Bishop Hendricken High School before earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and later his Master’s in Business Administration from Johnson & Wales University (JWU). His career reflected his passion for design, community, and service.

David began his architectural journey at Ira Rakatansky, Inc. Architects, and went on to serve as University Architect at Johnson & Wales University for 18 years, where he played an integral role in shaping the campus. In his final role as Senior Project Manager at Cushman & Wakefield, where he worked for nine years, David oversaw numerous impactful projects, including his most exciting achievement: leading the construction of the Citizens Bank headquarters in Johnston, Rhode Island.

Beyond his professional life, David was deeply committed to giving back. In his earlier life David enjoyed coaching youth sports for his sons, volunteering for various community activities, was a regular blood donor and participated in several philanthropic initiatives. Later, he went on to serve as a board member of Caritas Smile for 14 years, helping bring joy and essential resources to communities in need both locally and in the Dominican Republic.

Generous and humble, David often performed random acts of kindness—quiet gestures that brightened lives without ever seeking recognition.

Known for his charm, kindness, and ever-present smile, David embodied the qualities of a true gentleman. He loved a fine cigar, a perfectly made martini, and time spent with loved ones. Whether volunteering, sharing laughter with friends, or simply being there when someone needed a hand, David lived a life defined by service, integrity, and heart.

David is survived by the love of his life and partner, Sixcia Devine (and her son, John Daniel Devine), his beloved son Nicholas A. Varone, and the late Michael T. Varone; his mother, Janice (Pezzullo) Varone and father, the late Richard T. Varone; and his sisters, Allison Johnson, Kristin Sorensen (David Sorensen), and Tracey MacEachern (David MacEachern), along with his cherished nieces and nephews. David touched countless lives across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and beyond, and his presence will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held on September 9th from 4–7 PM at Nardolillo Funeral Home, Cranston, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on September 10th at 10:00 AM at Holy Apostles Church, Cranston, RI.  Burial will take place in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.

In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to Caritas Smile at www.caritasmile.org/donate, continuing his legacy of kindness and service to others.
