Memorial Service Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Visitation 12:30 p.m. Service 2:00 p.m. Episcopal Church of the Nativity Greenwood, Mississippi
David Allan "Stick" Young was born October 23, 1962 in Clarksdale, MS. Stick was a Lee Academy graduate and attended Mississippi State University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Delta State University.
Stick began his career with Helena Agri in the accounting department in Memphis, TN and recently retired after 37 years of service. In 1992, he and his wife, Shawna Malloy Young, moved to Greenwood where he transitioned into sales. Stick was a respected leader in the farm chemical industry and achieved great success across multiple decades. He consistently ranked among the top in his field earning numerous awards which he accepted with a humble and gracious spirit. Stick was a two time Marubeni Man of the Year Award winner. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding character, job performance and willingness to go the extra mile. Stick was recognized as a Green and Gold Award recipient for twenty years and received multiple Top Gun Awards for his outstanding sales performance. He also won the Seedsman's Award in 2022.
Arch Howell, a longtime friend and colleague said, "He was more like a brother. The office will be different now. We'll have to stop and listen for his advice and direction, and when we need a laugh, we'll think back on the many phrases he coined over the years. It was an honor to call him my friend."
Stick valued hard work and loyalty. He viewed each one of his customers as his close friends. He loved helping them with all aspects of their farm operations. He was invested in their success.
John Bush shared, "Not only was Stick our seed and chemical salesman, but he was also our best friend for three generations. There was absolutely nothing he wouldn't do for the Bush family. Whenever someone had a question on the farm, the answer was always: 'Call Stick, he'll know' He will be missed a long time."
Stick was an avid hunter and spent countless hours hunting and preparing at Island 66 Hunting and Fishing Club where he served as President for many years. In 2011, he harvested his first Boone and Crockett Buck and the first for I66. He enjoyed many hunting trips with friends throughout the United States and Canada.
Stick had a special kind of presence. He was deeply thoughtful and extremely responsible. He had a sharp wit that he shared through the many words of advice he freely gave to everyone. Stick was proud. He was proud of his work ethic. He was proud of his accomplishments. He was proud of his friends but mostly, Stick was proud of his family. He cherished time spent with Shawna and his daughter, Neely. Stick was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Nativity.
With his passing, he leaves behind a triumphant example of faith, family, loyalty and a strong work ethic. The words "can't" and "quit" were not part of his vocabulary. He will be remembered and forever loved by those who were blessed to call him husband, daddy, brother and friend.
Stick is survived by his wife of 33 years, Shawna Malloy Young and one daughter, Neely Elizabeth Young; his siblings Ricky Young (Jeanne), Lisa Young Schuh (Sid), Guy Young (Rhonda) and Johnny Young. He was preceded in death by his parents Ramona Noe Young and James Young; and a brother, Michael Young.
