Harold Milton "Budd" Phelps passed away peacefully at home on the morning of 11/24/25 after a yearlong, valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Cleveland, MS to CC "Bud" Phelps and Rose Doris Verdicano Phelps. In 1963, the Phelps family moved to Clarksdale, MS. Budd graduated from Lee Academy. He then completed his studies at Delta State University graduating with a degree in Marketing. After college, Budd settled in Clarksdale and went to work with his father in the furniture business. In 1983, the Phelps family began their own furniture business, Phelps Brothers Furniture. In 1991, they opened a second store, The Furniture Gallery. In 2000, the family consolidated both stores to one location on Highway 61/State Street. The stores have served Clarksdale and surrounding communities for over 40 years.
In 1998, at the age of 42, Budd became a family man when he married Lisa and acquired two beautiful daughters, a German Shephard, a tank full of fish, and a cat. Budd loved his family beyond measure as was evident by his commitment to them until the very end.
Budd considered himself a people person and loved old friends, new friends, customers, neighbors, church members, really anyone who would engage. He will always be known for his love of people and his sense of humor. While at Delta State, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity where he proudly served as social chairman and shared many stories of the fun, he and his fraternity brothers had. Budd, was also an avid bowler, starting at the age of 12 with the Junior League and boasted a fifty-year bowling career. He also loved golf and spending time with his friends on the course until his health would not allow him anymore. He would tell everyone that some of the most memorable times of his life were spending time with his daughters as they were involved in Youth Incorporated sports, specifically, softball and basketball. Budd was extremely civic minded and advocated for the best for his community of Clarksdale, MS. He served Clarksdale as a commissioner on the Board of Commissioners from 2005-2009.
Budd's relationship with God was center to him which proved true in his treatment of others, his family, church and community. He was an active member of Clarksdale Baptist Church where he served on multiple committees assisting in securing the groundwork to share God's love with others. Budd was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ronald Collins Phelps. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Hudson Phelps and two daughters, Sydney Rhea Pitts (Jack) and Jamie Kate Lilly, his brothers Keith, Tom (Cathy) and Tim Phelps, nieces, Katherine Ann Danna (Charles) and Collins Phelps. Finally, he is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Quinten and Billie Pitts, beloved great nephew, Lee Danna, and.Skippy.
Services will be held, with respect to the Egg Bowl, at Clarksdale Baptist Church on Friday November 28th with visitation at 9:00AM and funeral at 10:00AM followed by interment at Oakridge Cemetery.
Budd has asked specifically for donations to be made to Purposefully Made Ministries or to the charity of your choice.
