David Michael Zimmerman, age 87, peacefully left this world on August 22, 2025, surrounded by love.

Born on September 28, 1937, in Oshkosh, WI, David was the son of Leonard and Margaret Zimmerman. He was the second of four children-growing up with his older brother Leonard and younger sisters, Barbara and Joan. Known in his teenage years as a "Fonzie-like" figure with his leather jacket, jeans, and boots, David was the sharp-witted, mischievous "smart-aleck" who sometimes learned life's lessons the hard way. Despite his playful spirit, he was a deeply protective older brother, especially to his younger sisters.

In 1963, David began what would become his lifelong career as a truck driver. He proudly drove across 48 states and into Canada, logging countless miles and memories on the open road.

David was the father of three children: Daryl, David, and Debra Zimmerman. The twinkle in his eye was when he became a grandfather for the first time with the birth of his granddaughter, Bobbi Jo (Veldman). Later in life, he met the love of his life, Karen Bjerkvold, and the two were married in Las Vegas on May 25, 1997-an unforgettable day where Karen was escorted down the aisle by Elvis, and David, with his characteristic humor, misplaced the wedding ring. Together, David and Karen shared a passion for travel, eventually purchasing a camper to journey across the country. Along the way, they were joined by their beloved dogs, Charlie and Georgie, who became cherished companions on their adventures.

A talented woodworker, David spent countless hours creating shelves, quilt racks, and toy boxes-each piece marked with his signature touch of a hand-carved heart or two. Generous to the core, David was the kind of man who would always be the first to lend a hand or even the shirt off his back.

The last six years of David's life were spent at Dimensions Living, where he made many friends and found joy in everyday moments. He loved playing bingo with his "bingo buddy," listening to TJ & Lynn, attending auctions with his bingo winnings, joining the Wednesday Men's Group, and visits from Bob's dog, Faith. He especially delighted in his favorite treats-Nutty Buddy bars and Ice Lemonade-and in the joyful company of "the little one," with whom he played UNO, checkers, and attended activities in his final months.

David is survived by his children Daryl Zimmerman, David Zimmerman, and Debra Zimmerman; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Joan Sweetalla; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen; his parents, Leonard and Margaret; his brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Shirley Zimmerman; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Seth Parsons; and his brother-in-law, Roman Sweetalla.

David's family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Aseracare Hospice, especially his nurse Kayla, and the staff at Dimensions Living-with special thanks to Rachel, who shared a special bond with him.

David will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, generosity, humor, and the love he carried for his family and friends.

David's journey on this earth has ended, and as the white dove has taken flight, we take comfort in knowing his spirit is free. In the words of the song "See You Again," we hold to the hope of reunion and the love that never fades. In his own words, David leaves us with his final message:

"I'm out of here."

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of David on Friday, September 5, 2025, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 606 N. Oneida Street, Appleton, WI 54911.
