Dean Eugene Knox, husband, father, grandfather, businessman, and great good friend, died peacefully surrounded by family Sunday, November 13, 2022. Born in 1937, he was raised in the San Joaquin Valley, California and graduated from Armstrong College in Berkley. Dean was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps, including a tour of duty in Okinawa. Business took him to Atlanta where he met and married Lina Smith and they made their home in Tallahassee. Formerly a residential building contractor, he retired from the Department of Insurance, Division of Rehabilitation and Liquidation. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he was Junior Warden, and on the board at the Big Bend Hospice House. Dean enjoyed participating in The Tallahassee Exchange Club, The Cotillion Club, The Colonels Club, and The Seminole Boosters. His quick wit and sense of humor could always be counted on for a great story.
Dean is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lina, and two daughters and sons-in-law, Kate and Brent Masters and Sara and Jeff Merrill. He was a very proud "D" to Knox, Drew and Bryce Masters and Smith and Harrison Merrill. He is also survived by his nephews Todd and Blair Knox and their families, and the Jones Family in California.
His main focus has always been his family as he actively supported his girls' many and varied interests. He loved sports and was a loyal and enthusiastic Florida State Seminole fan. He loved and appreciated his wonderful friends and enjoyed golfing, traveling and other activities with them. His all time favorite get-a-way was his cabin on Lake Toxaway, NC, where he gathered with family and friends enjoying the crisp air, mountain scenery and afternoon boat rides.
A service is planned for 3:00 on Monday, November 21 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 211 North Monroe Street. The service will be livestreamed at https://www.saint-john.org/event/knoxfuneral/ Visitation with the family will be at the home of Sara and Jeff Merrill, 300 Cortez Street, 4:00 - 6:00 pm, on Sunday, November 20. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to either St. John's Episcopal Church ( https://www.saint-john.org/give/ ) or Big Bend Hospice (https://bigbendhospice.charityproud.org/Donate ).
Kelly Barber of Bevis Funeral Home (850-385-2193 or www.bevisfh.com) is assisting the Knox family with their arrangements.
