Dean Matzker

Dean J. Matzker, 80, of Vandalia, IL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at SBL Fayette County Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, Vandalia with Rev. Fr. Seth Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 8:30-10:30 AM, Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Caring & Sharing, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or to an organization of the donor's choice. Online condolences can be expressed at www.hohltandfilefh.com. Dean Joseph Matzker was born on March 19, 1945 in Vandalia, IL, the son of Anton Joseph and Mildred Serena (Gudehus) Matzker. He married Virginia Kay "Genny" Adermann on July 06, 1984. Together, they had just recently celebrated 41 years of marriage. Dean was a genuine, modest, and compassionate person. His lifelong dedication and passion for farming were evident in everything he did. Dean had a deep love for working, attending farm and car shows, classic Ford Mustangs, NASCAR collectibles, and hunting. He generously volunteered his time to Caring & Sharing for 44 years, where he also served as treasurer. Dean was a devout member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and a former board member of the Fayette County Farm Bureau. He cherished every moment spent with his family and friends. Mr. Matzker is survived by his wife, Genny Matzker of Vandalia; son, Darren Matzker with Shannon of Lake St. Louis; son, Todd Matzker of Brownstown; step-daughter, Jodie Bernhardt and husband John of Chicago; brother, Bill Matzker of O'Fallon; sisters, Cathy Diveley, Rita King and husband Rick, and Marie Washburn and husband Keith, all of Springfield; grandchildren, Zakkary with Becky, Nora, and Bailey; great-grandson, Gabriel; extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ryan Matzker; and brother, Leon Matzker.
