Dean Ray Smallwood Sr.

Dean Smallwood, age 48, passed away on October 10, 2025. Visitation and Wake Ceremony will begin at 8 PM on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the Meshakwad Center. A Funeral ceremony will be held at 10 AM on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Meshakwad Center. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery.
Zhongwaywaygahbow, Dean Smallwood Sr. enjoyed golfing and traveling with his family, he was heavily involved in powwows across Turtle Island "USA & Canada", where he'd sing and visit with family and friends. Dean loved and lived for his children, always putting them first in his life. He was a professional photographer. Dean loved shooting portraits his photos were included in different art shows, catalogs and galleries. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, and being outdoors with family. Dean is very passionate about high end sneakers and made his dream come true with opening and operating a successful shoe store with his beautiful wife for many years. He was known for his crazy, out of line sense of humor, his wisdom, and his good advice. Growing up Dean played in many basketball tournaments and leagues. He was loved by his friends, family, especially his aunts, uncles and acquaintances. Dean is a Midewiwin Lodge and Big Drum member. He sang with many drum groups over the years including Walkin Bull, Battle River, Red Lake, Blackstone, White Fish Bay, Red Bull, Stoney Park and Red Willow.
Dean is survived by his loving wife, Angel Waleli Smallwood-Frank; daughters, Azure Smallwood, Dowan Smallwood, Lauren Smallwood, Shianna Smallwood; sons, Daeson Smallwood, Dean Smallwood Jr., Alexander Foote-Smallwood, Sedrick (Cherish) Hindsley-Smallwood; one and only beautiful granddaughter, Miikawaadizi Odaanisan Hindsley-Smallwood; adopted mothers, Diane, Laura, Georgette, Angila Rae; special niece, Antonia Archambault-Smallwood-Downwind; sisters, Nikki (Chris) Waltz, Falon Jackson, Karla Smallwood-Downwind; brothers, Dennis Smallwood, Justin (Candace) Smallwood-Downwind, Eli Staples, Stacy (Nicole) Archambault, Kevin (Sandra) White; aunties, Phyllis Gurno, Sharon Lussier, Sharyl Downwind, Jeanine Downwind, Nancy Wood, and Deb Morrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry Smallwood and Delora Downwind; adopted father, Larry McKay; sisters, Shannon Smallwood, Amber Downwind; brothers, Shane Smallwood, Larry Smallwood Jr., McAllen Hart-Garvin, Jon Prentice, Xavier Westbrook; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
