February 28, 1953-March 18, 2025
After years of battling heart disease and other health issues, Dean Stewart passed away on March 18, 2025. Dean was born one of seven children in Columbus, GA on February 28, 1953 to Bill and LaDean Stewart. Dean was the middle child with five brothers and one sister.
Dean loved and was loved by his family.
After graduating from Columbus High School, Dean attended Georgia Southwestern State University for one year before transferring to Auburn University. After four years, Dean received his business degree from Auburn in 1975.
Dean worked in business management for the Dobbs House Food Services at the Atlanta Airport, TRW in Columbus, Ga and Hitachi and DCA in Atlanta. Before retiring, Dean worked for Artistic Pools in Atlanta. During his time at Hitachi, he visited Japan and at DCA he visited Ireland.
In 1978, while working at TRW in Columbus, Dean met Svetlana Halski, aka Sweet.
Sweet was an accounting student on a tennis scholarship at Columbus College, now Columbus University, when they met at the apartment complex where they both lived.
After a yearlong courtship, Dean and Sweet were married on August 11, 1979.
Dean and Sweet have three children, Glen, Alex and Ellen.
Glen is married to Hannah and they have a 2-year-old daughter, Isla.
Alex is married to Courtney and they have a 2-year-old daughter, Monroe.
Dean loved spending time with the family and Glen and Hannah's dog Mercury and Ellen's dog Mowgli.
When Glen and Alex were young, Dean spent many hours as a Scout Master.
Glen and Alex both went on to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Dean had a special talent for making it rain any time the Scouts went on overnight camping trips.
Dean was a long-time Auburn football fan, and Auburn basketball fan in recent years.
Dean was known for his great sense of humor and loved to laugh and make people laugh.
He took a comedy class and did a stand-up routine at the Atlanta Punchline.
Dean enjoyed tennis with his family, both watching and playing.
He enjoyed spending time at the beach with his family in Hilton Head.
Along with two of his brothers, Dean had a love-hate relationship with his 1974 MGB.
Dean will be greatly missed by family, friends and even strangers.
A memorial service for Dean will be held at Decatur First United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 29 at 2 PM and a reception will follow the memorial service.
