Dean Edward Troxell, II peacefully left this earth on July 19, 2022 to join his beloved wife and best friend, Marie, in heaven. Dean leaves behind three children who love him with all their hearts, Robin, Scott, and Karen. He is predeceased by his wife Marie, his son Brad, his brother Hank, his parents Avanelle and Dean, and his first wife, Shirley. Dean was fortunate enough to be blessed by 12 grandchildren who carry on his amazing legacy: Nora, Rory, Taylor, Colin, Meg, Jack, Katie, Danny, Jack, Katya, Matt, and Tori. Dean never met a person he didn't like and is remembered by a huge extended family and group of friends, all of whom he cared for deeply. Dean was so proud of his family and loved each and every one of them tremendously.
Dean was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 6, 1933. He lived an astonishingly full life. He loved to regale anyone who would listen with stories of Grand-pop Sweeley who drove an ammunition wagon at Gettysburg, growing up during World War II and paying a quarter for War Bond stamps, and his father who played football for Pop Warner at Pitt. He loved to tell stories of his mother and her identical twin who used to go on each other's dates, being the starting center on the North Fulton High football team and a member of Phi Delta Theta at Georgia Tech, and of course, his time in the US Navy. His first cruise was aboard the USS Wisconsin, where he traveled to Paris and met his first wife, Shirley. After graduating with a degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech, Dean was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy aboard the USS Holder. The Navy brought him to innumerable exotic places and while in the Mediterranean, his first child, Robin, was born. On his way home to her, he flew a non-pressurized plane and blew out his ear drums, much to the chagrin of all of us who had to speak loudly from then on.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Dean, Shirley and Robin moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where Brad was born. Dean worked as a salesman at Friden, then took a job with ASC Tabulating Corporation, moving to Lake Bluff, Illinois. Scott was born in 1964. The family then moved first to Ridgewood and later to Ramsey, New Jersey, as Dean was promoted to Vice President and Board Member. In 1969, the family ditched the corporate world and bought Taylor Motor Court in East Sandwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The 12-cottage resort was renamed Whaleback Hill, and the family ran it until November 1970 when they sold it and moved to Torrington, Connecticut where Dean took a position as Vice President of Patterson Oil Company. In 1977, Dean opened his own franchise of Bailey Management, where he recruited top level executives, and trained associates in how to recruit and find jobs for qualified candidates. Dean was a talker, very personable, and very successful in that line of work.
In 1980, he took over management of the Branford Office of Bailey Associates, where he met his wife, Marie, also a successful Bailey Management recruitment franchisee. Soon after, his daughter Karen was born and thus began what he called "40 years of flat out love and excitement" with Marie and Karen in Guilford, Connecticut. Together, they traveled to incredible places because he always said, "travel was their thing"...Greece, Paris, Istanbul, Tuscany, Sicily, Egypt, Normandy, Spain, and the Caribbean to name just a few, and of course, tons of adventures aboard the family boat. Captain Trox was happiest at the helm of the MaKaDe II and he, Marie, and Karen, spent so much time together as a family making beautiful memories. As their only child, Karen's best friends and playmates were Marie and Dean. The three loved nothing more than sitting around the table playing a board game or cards or lounging on the back deck, reading books and telling stories. One couldn't ask for a more idyllic and wonderful childhood. Three became four when one of Dean's absolute favorite people in the world, Conor, joined the family. Their children, Nora and Rory, were the apple of Dean's eye and he lived for every story, every hug, and every moment he and Marie spent with them.
No one was better at trivia than Dean. He could rattle off history and sports statistics and was the "Commissioner" of the extended family's NFL group. Not surprisingly, the Commish won quite a bit! But what stood out the most about Dean to everyone who had the distinct honor of meeting him or knowing him was his unending and unwavering positivity. Dean found the good. He never met a flavor of ice cream he didn't love (and ate a bowl every night), a meal that wasn't "the best meal he's ever had", or a person who he didn't find a connection with. Even on the hardest of days, he always found the good. And he taught all of his family to do the same. Dean's legacy lives on in his beautiful family who love him and miss him tremendously but will always find the good in every situation, just like he taught us to do. The world according to Trox: Never miss an opportunity to make someone's day better, always find the good, and sneak an extra scoop of ice cream on the sundae.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022 from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. Dean will then be laid to rest with a Graveside Service and Military Honors at 11:00 a.m. in the Mayflower Cemetery, 774 Tremont Street in Duxbury.
