Deborah Ruth Roper, a resident of Otto, NC, passed away Monday, January 26th, 2026, unafraid and surrounded by love after a brief, yet courageous battle with cancer.
Deborah, affectionately known as Debbie, was born on July 9th, 1963, at Angel Medical Center in Franklin, NC. Debbie grew up wild and free in beautiful Burningtown, NC, chasing streams, climbing mountains, and having a deep, nurturing love for the great outdoors. After graduating Franklin High School in 1981, Debbie followed her yearning of knowledge to New Life Bible College in Cleveland, TN. While studying Education, she worked with a group known as Campus Challenge, spreading the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. Following graduation at NLBC, Debbie obtained her degree in Business at Southwestern Community College.
Debbie loved all stages and types of life. Her compassion and care for others ranged from her family, co-workers, friends, and community members. When Debbie wasn't tending to people, you would find her growing and healing plants in both her gardens and home. When she needed to refresh and fuel her soul, you'd find her on a beach somewhere, soaking up rays.
Debbie is survived by a large and loving family who will remember her fondly. Most of all, she leaves behind her devoted wife and best friend of 21 years, Leslie Michelle Hughes. From meeting and instantly connecting, to traveling to the beach, venturing on camping trips, enjoying countless bonfires, thrifting together, and loving their children and grandchildren, Debbie and Leslie shared a deeply memorable life together.
Deborah is also survived by her daughter Amanda Joy Lomas and her children Tiana Olivia Roper, Shaela Noel Lomas, and Amani Leonna Eason; daughter Aubrey Lynn Bascom and her daughter JoceLynn Bri Owens; and daughter Jamie Christine Hammonds and her children Faith Anne Luce, Hailey Michelle Hopwood, Kaylyn Johnson, Allison Breann Hughes, and Kameron Jared Strong. She is also survived by her siblings Connie R. Underwood, John C. Roper, Randy H. Roper, and Kimberly L. Roper, and nephews Robert and William Boyce, Jacob Roper, Joey and Jordan Nowak, as well as nieces Ciara Holden and Brandy Roper.
Preceding her in death are her parents, John David Roper and Dorothy Jean Roper (Tallent); her brother, Larry D. Roper; and her beloved longtime dog, Otie.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for early in March and details will be forthcoming.
