Debra Ruth Clay

Debra R. Clay of Green Bay, age 67, passed away Sunday morning November 26, 2023 at Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay, WI. Debra, better known as Deb, was born in Oconto County, WI on January 17, 1956 as daughter to the late Herbert and Elizabeth (Ratz) Sommerfeld. Debra grew up helping on the farm and was a graduate of Gillett High School with the class of 1974. She attended the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, where she earned a bachelor's degree in history and business. On June 22, 1985 Debra married Lawrence Clay at St. John Riverside Lutheran Church in Gillett. She had two children with Larry, John and Allison, who were the center of her world. Debra was employed as a bookkeeper for various businesses over the years, including Pierquet's, Showcase Kitchens, MGL Fitness, and most recently with Green Bay Nursery. She enjoyed all things Disney, and Friday fish frys. Debra had a passion for plants, which she showcased with many flower gardens and hanging baskets around the house. She was a bargain hunter who enjoyed shopping, couldn't pass up a good deal, or leave a coupon to expire. She loved cooking, baking, and spending time with her family during the holidays. Debra is survived by her husband of 38 years: Larry Clay, Green Bay; one son: John Clay, Green Bay; one daughter and son-in-law: Allison (Joshua Romero) Clay, TX; one sister: Linda Scapple, MN; two brothers: Steve Sommerfeld and Kurt Krueger, both of Gillett; two brothers-in-law: Roger Clay, MN, Steve (Sue) Clay, MI; and one sister-in-law: Carolyn (Dennis) Clay-Pineda, MI; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents: Herb and Liz Sommerfeld; one brother: Gary Sommerfeld, and one brother-in-law: Dick Scapple. Visitation for Debra will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at St. John Riverside Lutheran Church, (5686 St Hwy 32, Gillett) from 11:00 AM until the time of funeral services at 1:00 PM. Officiating at the service will be Rev. Mark Palmer with burial to follow at St. John Riverside Lutheran Church Cemetery.
