He grew up in Parma, Ohio, graduating from Valley Forge High School in 1963. Denny graduated with a B.S.Ed. from Bowling Green State University in January 1968 and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He graduated with his M.Ed. in August 1970, also from Bowling Green State University.

They visited all seven continents, over one hundred countries, and all fifty states. They enjoyed many trips with Park National Bank's Freedom Years and sailing with Princess Cruises. Their very favorite trip was an African safari to Kenya and Tanzania. He volunteered at The Works and the Midland Theater for many years.
He was a long-time member of St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church in Newark, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.
He enjoyed cheering on his favorite sports teams as a season ticket holder for both the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians/Guardians, and he was a fervent supporter of the Ohio State Buckeyes. I have many fond memories of Mr. Abend from my time as a student athlete at Utica. He rarely called me by my real name and when he announced the names at sporting events he often announced me as Zelda Gilroy. He always told me that I reminded him of Zelda from the Dobie Gillis show.
