Brother Dennis Doose, CSC
Brother Dennis Paul Doose, CSC, 86, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, at the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence,
Austin, TX. Born in Los Angeles, CA, Brother Dennis earned a BS in Electrical Engineering at Loyola University of Los Angeles before entering Holy Cross. He was received as a novice at St. Joseph Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, IN, and made his first profession of vows there in January 1952. Brother Dennis lived for 63 years as a professed religious Brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross. His first assignment was to teach science and mathematics at St. Edward's High School,
Austin, TX, for a year. Over the next dozen years, he alternated teaching at St. Anthony High School, Long Beach, CA, and Holy Cross High School, San Antonio, TX. He completed his MS in Science Education at the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. In 1976, Brother Dennis came to Holy Cross of San Antonio to stay. His science classes were engaging, experiential and lively. He had a great talent for challenging and exciting students of all abilities. Another key to his successful teaching is that Brother Dennis listened to his students to discover their interests. This helped to keep him on the leading edge of innovation. Brother Dennis brought computers into the classroom long before other educators had even thought of the usefulness of this tool. Eventually, he became an expert in grant writing to access federal funding for internet access, telecommunications, and internal connections, not only for Holy Cross High School but other schools of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the Edgewood School District. Brother Dennis applied his characteristic intensity to his train hobby. He developed an extensive collection of model trains of post war and modern manufacture, and even used this hobby to teach students applied electronics in a creative fun way. Often setting aside his health concerns, Brother Dennis pushed through the pains of his physical ailments and limitations, willing himself forward to continue advancing his many projects. Increasingly, he relied upon his former student and professional tech collaborator, Allen Bordelon, for care and support. In 2024, Brother Dennis moved to the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence in Austin, the assisted living facility for the Brothers.
