Dennis Mudd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph E. Ratterman & Son - Southside on Dec. 12, 2025.
Dennis James "Denny" Mudd, loved by all who knew him, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025. Born on May 13, 1949, Denny lived a life defined by a deep devotion to those he loved. Above all, Denny was a caregiver-someone who gave generously of his time and heart – for years he cared for many friends and family. This calling extended into his professional life, where he retired after 30 years as a case manager for the State of Kentucky benefits office, helping countless families. His warmth and reliability were constants for family, friends, and anyone fortunate enough to be in his life. Denny loved to travel, embracing the joy of exploring new places, especially on his trips touring the Western US and Europe. He always loved a good flea market or antique store. His fascination with steam trains brought him countless moments of happiness, and he treasured every opportunity to watch and ride them. With a deep love for the outdoors, Denny enjoyed camping, finding peace in the simplicity of being surrounded by nature. He loved the water as well, whether boating on Rough River Lake with family and friends or watching the waves on one of his annual trips to Florida. A man of many talents, Denny was also a great cook, known for his delicious homestyle cooking. He especially delighted family and friends with his cakes and desserts, which became staples at gatherings and celebrations. Denny was a Louisville native and a proud Kentuckian. Although a graduate of the University of Louisville, heremained a lifelong University of Kentucky fan, cheering for the Wildcats with enthusiasm. Denny was predeceased by his mother, Catherine L. Mudd (née Melcher) and his father, James A. Mudd. He is survived by many loving cousins and extended family members, who will forever carry his love, his traditions, and his caregiving spirit. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 9:00 a.m., with a prayer service at 12:00 p.m. at Ratterman Funeral Home, 7336 Southside Dr., Louisville, KY 40214, followed by a graveside service at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church cemetery in Calvary, KY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church cemetery fund, 235 S. Spalding Avenue, Lebanon, KY 40033.

Circumstances will keep me from being able to attend the service for Dennis, but I feel compelled to write a note about him. I've known Dennis since middle school. He and I walked together to classes in high school for the years before I turned sixteen and had a car. After that he rode with me to school every day for two years. He and I and others spent a number of weekends and summer days together, shared any number of adventures, even exploring a cave one summer while four of us stayed in a little cinderblock cabin we dubbed the "Blockhouse" complete with a sign to tell the world. Though we grew apart after school and when I married Dennis has drifted in and out of my life since. He never forgot a friend nor ever failed to tell me just how much he enjoyed our time together, he will be sorely missed.-- Danny Williams
