Dennis W. Scherwinski, age 84, of Jackson, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital. He was born on July 25, 1941, in Butternut, WI, to Clara and Emil Scherwinski.
Dennis grew up on the family farm in Butternut with his five brothers. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Linsmeyer, on October 29, 1960. Together they moved to Milwaukee and later settled in Cedar Creek. Dennis became a mason and eventually founded his own company, Craft Masonry, which proudly continues today into its third generation.
A man of many talents, Dennis loved working with his hands. He was an avid woodworker and furniture maker who enjoyed crafting pieces for family and friends. He designed and built the family home and took great pride in a job well done. Dennis also loved any opportunity to use his backhoe and excavator, happily spending hours "digging in the dirt."
He kept himself busy with many hobbies, especially raising and training horses and taking his family horseback riding. Dennis and Mary were also enthusiastic golfers and made wonderful memories on golf trips with Jerry and Vina, and rounds of golf with son Wayne, his brothers, nephews and grandkids. Their many trips to Nashville with cousin Ronny and his wife Darlene, also were fond memories.
Family was the heart of Dennis's life. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He will be remembered for his generosity, unwavering support, and deep faith. His guidance, humility, work ethic, and honesty were evident in everything he did and were instilled in those he loved. Many weekends were spent cutting and splitting firewood with his family, and he was well known for making his famous peanut butter pancakes for the kids. He could often be found rocking babies to sleep in his favorite recliner.
Dennis had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir for more than 40 years. His favorite memories are gathering in a circle with his brothers and singing old church hymns. He also loved singing along to his favorite records on Sunday mornings, especially those by Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, and Jim Reeves.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary; his six children: Wayne (Linda) Scherwinski, Roxy (Dave) Lind, Kris (Steve) Person, Sue (Tom) D'Amico, Amy (Mark) Runge, and Denise (Rick) Flanagan; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his brothers Howard (Judy), Rodney (Marilyn), and Glenn (Joyce) Scherwinski; and his sister-in-law Vina Scherwinski, brothers-in-law Louis (Barbara) Linsmeyer and Jerry (Sharon) Linsmeyer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara and Emil Scherwinski; his son Scott; his son-in-law James Van Someren, Sr.; his brothers Jerry and Eugene; sister-in-law Barbara Scherwinski and his mother- and father-in-law, Mary and Louis Linsmeyer, sister- and brother-in-law Dorothy and Edward Van Camp; sister-in-law Lorraine Jablonsky.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in West Bend, with Rev. Stephen Reynolds officiating. The family will greet visitors at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. A reception will follow in the church's lower level.
