Dennis Earl Smith, of Kemp, Texas, passed away on October 28, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. He was born on October 20, 1952, in Athens, Texas to parents Walter Henry and Betty Lou (Gunnels) Smith.
After graduating from Bryan Adams High School in 1971, Dennis served his community as a police officer until changing careers to support his family. Dennis retired as an All-Star Truck Diver/Trainer with UPS Freight (formerly Overnight Trucking). Throughout his career, he touched many lives and made lasting friendships, all while ensuring the safety and well-being of those around him.
Dennis had a knack for bringing joy wherever he went. A highlight of his life was being a dirt track racer, you could always find him tooling around in the garage when not circling the racetrack. Dennis loved dressing as Santa Claus at the local senior center, and McClains, where his playful spirit and warm smile brought happiness to those who gathered. He was known fondly as “Papa,” especially by grandkids, and this endearing nickname echoed throughout the community. Dennis's affectionate and engaging nature endeared him to many, making him a beloved figure who never failed to light up a room.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Betty Smith; wife, Mary Smith; and sister, Betty Denise Penix.
Dennis is survived by his daughter, April Marie Nations and husband Jeremy of Erick, Oklahoma; daughter, Amy Michell Yudizky and wife Tonya of Rosenberg, Texas; daughter, Kristi Renea Dickey and husband John of Kemp, Texas; sister, Sandie Smith of Marlin, Texas; grandson, Mason Yudizky and wife Stormy, Savannah, Alysia, Amanda, Ashwyn and Nacoma; 5 great-grandkids; numerous family, friends, and loved ones.
