I was just reading my OHIO Gardening book by Denny McKeown, recalling when I faithfully listened to his program, "Gardening with Denny" on 610 WTVN Saturday mornings, going to his Meet and Greets at area nurseries- I was a "garden groupie", and remembering how sad I was when he was no longer local.
I looked him up and pleasantly surprised to find Cincinnati has enjoyed his business with his son for around thirty years!
Research brings me to this site, deeply saddened to learn all of you lost Denny on Christmas Day.
He certainly helped me with developing gardens for my home (was just 12" deep just in the front of the house when we bought it).
Thankful for him, prayers for family.

Denny was such a kind man with a giving spirit. Even to strangers. He will be missed.

My friend and mentor, the fellow who opened the door for me to join him on his live radio program many years ago has passed away. Denny inspired a lot of us to get out there and get our hands dirty and add beauty to our yards.
We formed, at first, what seemed like an odd friendship. When we met in 1996, my stint on the radio program was to be a "one-time-thing." It was to help him handle some misinformation that had been relayed about releasing trapped wildlife in park areas. At the time he was not a fan of critters and bugs, and he couldn´t even say the word "snake" without a cold shiver running up his spine.
However, I guess he saw in me that I was comfortable talking with people (for those of you who know me, you know I´ll talk to nearly anyone...) and I gave out credible answers in a way that didn´t disparage or discredit the caller. Denny was kind to his callers as well, that was something that really stood out for me on our first show together. In a time when "talk radio" was really gearing up and seemed to involve a lot of yelling, Denny´s show did not go that route. You may have been the third caller that day to ask about tomatoes or rose slugs or crabgrass, but he treated you with respect and kindness to answer your questions.
I became a such a regular guest that Denny called me his "Resident Naturalist." For nearly 14 years we brought out the best in each other when we were together in the studio. He handled the regular gardening inquiries, and I handled the weird wildlife or mystery animal questions as well as those about native plant and backyard habitats. Over time, we learned so much from one another. He came to see the good in wildlife and bugs and even snakes! He started talking more about incorporating native plants in your yard as well.
In 2003 he invited me to author the Herb chapter in his upcoming revised edition of "The Gardening Book for Ohio." He was pleased enough with my work, that he gave me direct contact with the editor, I felt honored to be part of that project.
He likely never knew that his confidence in me pushed me to shine in other ways. I accepted a teaching position with Horticulture Degree program for University of Cincinnati, I went on to become Head Naturalist at Glenwood Gardens and Highfield Discovery Garden. I continued on my journey in a radio studio too. Thanks to Denny´s "one-time" invitation to the microphone, today I too host a weekly program right here in Cincinnati. I´ve been in radio for 25 years now.
There are not enough ways to say thank you, but thank you Denny and Happy Gardening in that Big Garden in the Sky...
To Denny's family - I wish you peace as you journey on without him. He left some big shoes to fill. And thank you for sharing him with all of us.

Denny was such a great guy--I am lucky to have worked on all the fun projects he and my dad undertook for the Jaycees and the Hope House. He's the reason I almost always said yes when asked to volunteer; I never knew when a volunteer gig would be as much fun as a WSAI Haunted House or a Bob Hope Christmas Village. Well, maybe none of them were ever quite that fun, so I'm glad I had the chance to work on all those crazy and fun things they put together for charitable organizations. My condolences to Denny's family. He will be missed throughout all the spheres of his interests, I am sure.

Dearest McKeown Family,
Our deepest sympathies to all that Denny touched, which was many both in person, on radio and in print. Denny was a true servant and caretaker of this earth and has left his legacy for generations to come. God Bless all of you and know whenever you hear a big belly laugh, that is the spirit of Denny, for that is what I think of, his joy and love of life. Chris and Janeen Moody

Denny- A true leader that always got things done. Twice the president of the Sycamore-Deer Park Jaycees. Great personality with all the positive traits. He will be missed.
