A true family man, Derek's greatest joy was attending his children's sporting events and extracurricular activities. His boundless love and care made him an exceptional husband and a cherished father. Derek's presence at his children's games was a testament to his unwavering support.
Beyond his role as a dedicated family man, Derek was a beacon of friendship. He leaves behind a circle of close friends who cherished his company. An avid Lions football fan, Derek found joy in cheering for his team during games and sharing the excitement of football Sundays with loved ones.
Derek is survived by his wife, Michelle Newton; children, Madelyn and Jax; father, David (Doreen) Newton; mother, Lori Sutherland; brothers, Mark Hanford and Nick (Jerrica) Hanford; parents-in-law, Paul (Patricia) Measle; sisters-in-law, Stephanie (Chris) Nanni, Sandra Farmer, Kelly (Jeremy) Pummill, and Anna (Neil) Berg. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and incredible friends.
Derek was preceded in death by his brother, Justin Newton, and grandparents Betty and Wallace Newton, Roscoe and Neva Sutherland. In this time of grief, we remember Derek for his warmth, love, and the lasting impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
The family honors the memory of Derek and invites you to a visitation on Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Kaatz Funeral Directors at 12:00 p.m. with a visitation prior at 11:30 a.m.
The family asks family and friends to dress casually and comfortably. While flowers are welcome, memorials may be made in Derek's honor to Henry Ford SandCastles Grief Support Program, 3031 W. Grand Blvd., #300, Detroit, MI 48202 or by visiting their website at aboutsandcastles.org.
