Dewey C. Washington Sr., 85, was born March 7, 1940 in Topeka, Kansas. Dewey was the youngest son of parents George Washington Sr. and Emma McCal Washington. He was the youngest of 11 children.
Dewey was baptized at an early age and became a member of True Vine Missionary Baptist Church.
He had a wonderful relationship with the creator (GOD).
Dewey grew up on the east side of Topeka with his mother, father, siblings and friends. He lost his mother Emma when he was 8 years old and his father when he was 19. Dewey and his siblings were blessed to have their oldest sister, Elease Spivey, step into the role of mother and help his father finish raising the children. As a child he loved hunting small animals, fishing and catching crawdads and frogs. He also talked about playing games, playing different sports at the family home on 15th and SE Adams in Topeka, KS and going up the hill to Pierce Edition to play with the kids that lived there. He enjoyed bowling, detailing his cars, singing, listening to Sam Cooke, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Soul Stirrers, The Brooklyn All-Stars, Otis Clay and many more. Dewey had a beautiful singing voice and was in a few singing groups when he was young. He loved going to the State Fair when it was held at the Topeka's Fair Ground. Back in the day, he loved partying with celebrities at the nightclubs on 4th street and the Meadow Acres Ballroom. He loved going to the Goodyear Ball every year. He liked finding sales at the Next to New Sale, going to garage sales and The Black Rodeo. He loved going to Denny's, Golden Corral and The Big Biscuit. He could talk for hours about music, boxing, sports and Goodyear. Dewey finally went on a trip out of state with his wife Ella in the early 2000's to California, Las Vegas and Texas. He had the time of his life.
Dewey attended Monroe Elementary School (Brown vs Board) and East Topeka Junior High.
Dewey was a hard worker since the age of 13. He dropped out of school after 8th grade to go work at his first official job in the main ballroom at The Jayhawk Hotel. After that, he moved on to the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. He then got the job he always wanted at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Dewey retired from Goodyear after 35 years. Dewey was married three times. First to Dorothy, second to Brenda, and lastly to Ella. He always wanted a big family of his own, which he achieved with Brenda Washington. It was the first time he had a chance to be a full-time father with the introduction of Jay Nash in his life and a few years later Brenda would give birth to Dewey C. Washington Jr. He was extremely happy to have two sons. He never had any daughters, but Brenda's twin sister Linda had 5 girls and he was known to say they were like his daughters to him, especially Mickelle Tally, his Mickey Mouse. Then for the last 24 years of his life, he had his loving daughter-in-law Jamie I. (Bowie) Washington. He accepted his wife Brenda's family as his own family for the remainder of his life and so did the rest of the Washington family tree. Washington's and Johnson's for life.
Dewey C. Washington Sr. transitioned to his eternal home on Thursday, October 30, 2025. He was preceded in death by wife Brenda I. Washington, who passed away in 1991 (their union was from 1972-1991), followed by his third wife Ella Washington, who passed in 2006 (their union was from 1996-2006), his two loving and amazing parents that started it all, George A. Washington Sr. and Emma Washington, 6 sisters: Elease Evelyn Spivey, Georgella Johnson, Beatrice Greene, Emma Mable Smith, Mary Levern Bolin (Peek-A-Boo), Rhoda Marie Ellis, 3 of his brothers: Isaac Washington, George Andrew Washington Jr., William Washington, Sr.
Leaving behind to cherish his memory are his beloved sons, Dewey C. Washington Jr. along with his wife Jamie I. (Bowie) Washington of Topeka, Kansas and Jay L. Nash along with his wife Deletria Nash; and one sister, Alyce (Washington) Johnson of Aurora, Colorado; 20 grandchildren; Dewey Jr's 8 children and Jay's 12 children, a host of great-grandchildren and a vast multitude of other relatives and friends who loved him and will miss him. Until We Meet Again!
Dewey C. Washington Jr.: A special thanks to my wife and children for helping me take care of my father. Anyone that I forgot to mention, thank you as well.
God Bless You All.
