DeWitt Byrom Davidson, Sr., 91, of
Grand Prairie, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born February 9, 1934, in
Poteet, Texas, he was the son of the late Joseph Vernon Davidson and the late Ethel Mae Byrom Davidson.
DeWitt grew up in Poteet with his devoted parents and two brothers. It was there that he met the love of his life, Helen Jean Kight. The couple married on May 7, 1955, and shared a beautiful 70-year marriage filled with love and adventure.
DeWitt attended Texas A&M University before proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his military service, he pursued his passion for aviation, earning his pilot's license in Bexar County, Texas. Flying became one of the great joys of his life. He took immense pride in his long and distinguished career as a commercial pilot, eventually retiring from Continental Airlines. He and Helen settled in Grand Prairie, drawn by its convenient proximity to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, which supported his lifelong career in aviation. Here he and Helen became members of First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie.
Known for his charm, quick wit, and unexpected humor, DeWitt had a special gift for connecting with people. He made friends wherever he went and took great care to nurture lifelong friendships with fellow pilots and childhood companions. He loved reading, exploring history, discovering local cultures during his travels, and savoring a good glass of wine. Some of his happiest moments were the summers spent with Helen, their children, and their grandchildren at the family cabin in the mountains of New Mexico.
Above all, DeWitt cherished his family. He provided a warm and wonderful life for his wife, children, and grandchildren, pouring his energy into making sure each one felt deeply loved, safe, and secure, and generously taking care of the families many needs. A devoted grandfather, he took special joy in supporting his grandchildren through every stage of life. After retiring, he was a constant presence. He opened his and Helen's home generously, offering stability whenever it was needed. DeWitt gave all this freely and unconditionally, asking nothing in return, and he took immense pride in watching his grandchildren grow into accomplished adults.
DeWitt will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate to know and love him.
He was preceded in death by his elder brother, Joseph V. Davidson, Jr.
He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 70 years, Helen Jean Davidson; daughters Cynthia Ann Helton and Suzanne Daughety; son DeWitt Byrom Davidson, Jr.; grandchildren Laura, Sam, Erin, Katy, and Jake; 10 great-grandchildren; and younger brother, Jim Ross Davidson.
Arrangements entrusted to Guerrero-Dean Funeral Home under the direction of Aaron King, Funeral Director.
