Dexter Murray, Jr., 60, of Gloucester and longtime resident of Groveland, passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of January 11, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Cherished husband of Bonnie (MacDougall) Murray.
Born and raised in
Gloucester, Massachusetts, Dexter later made his home in Groveland, where he was a longtime resident. He was the son of the late Dexter Murray, Sr. and the late Marion (Hubbard) Murray. A devoted family man, Dexter's greatest joy came from time spent with those he loved. He was known for his great sense of humor, strength, unwavering loyalty to his family and friends, and for living his life with laughter and passion.
Dexter loved playing sports and was an avid and passionate athlete growing up, playing football, basketball, and baseball. Later, he took great joy in watching his sons play sports and coaching them in baseball and football through youth programs. He also loved traveling with his wife and children, being near the water, and watching and quoting movies with his sons.
Dexter began his career in the insurance industry at New England Financial, gaining valuable experience. He later joined Savings Bank Life Insurance, where he enjoyed a distinguished 21-year career as Vice President and Controller, earning respect for his professionalism, integrity, and dedication.
At the age of 44, Dexter was diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumor. He faced the diagnosis as a challenge, determined to outlive the standard prognosis of 12–18 months, and did so by living 17 years after his initial diagnosis. Over the years, he not only persevered but also became a passionate advocate for others affected by brain tumors. He raised funds each year during the Boston Brain Tumor Walks, consistently being a top fundraiser, raising over $150,000 and always striving to help those newly diagnosed.
Above all, Dexter was a devoted husband and father. His marriage to Bonnie was marked by love, partnership, and deep mutual respect. He was a proud and loving father to his three sons, Jacob Murray, Liam Murray, and Ethan Murray, who were the center of his life and his greatest legacy.
In addition to his beloved wife Bonnie and his sons Jacob, Liam, and Ethan, Dexter is survived by his four sisters, Marcia Andrus and her husband Dana of Rockport, Debra Murray of Bluffton, SC, and her predeceased spouse Terry Cuilla, Carol Unis and her husband James of Gloucester, and Marilyn Pratt and her husband Jonathan of Gloucester; and his two brothers, Daniel Murray of Gloucester and his twin Dean Murray and his wife Annette Murray of Gloucester. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Dexter will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
