SIGOURNEY-Dickie Lee Hammes, age 71, of Sigourney, died Friday, October 11, 2024, at his home.
Dickie was born September 12, 1953, in Sigourney, to Harold and Ardis (Yahnke) Hammes and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1971. He served in the Army National Guard 134th Medical Company for over 15 years before being deployed during Operation Desert Storm. On November 11, 1989, he married Tamara Lynn Hall at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney. They were later divorced. Dickie worked at Louis Rich for several years until it closed in 1999. He then was an award-winning driver for Oskaloosa Grain until his retirement in 2014. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting, the Dallas Cowboys and watching Westerns, especially John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.
Survivors include two children: Troy Hammes of Sigourney and Shelby Hammes of Fairfield; two brothers: Mike (Sandy) Hammes of Coralville and Harold Dean (Gwen) Hammes of Leiester, North Carolina and two sisters: Mildred Spegal of Sigourney and Cindy (Tim) Salmon of Peoria, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Graveside Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney, with Rev. Robert Lathrop officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with military rites by the Sigourney American Legion Post #19. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney, where there will be a vigil service at 4:00.
