Dixie McDowell Obituary

Dixie Fisher McDowell, 80, of Shreveport, Louisiana, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on February 20, 2026.

Born on May 31, 1945, to William and Edith Fisher, Dixie grew up in Shreveport and graduated from Byrd High School in 1963. She continued her education at LSU and Centenary College before completing business school. In March 1965, she was a contestant in the Miss Shreveport Pageant, where she showcased her talent by playing the piano.

In June 1965, Dixie began working as a secretary at Western Electric’s new pilot plant. It was there that she met Charles “Charlie Mac” McDowell. Their love story began at work and led to a lifelong partnership marked by devotion, laughter, and family. They shared 46 years of marriage.

Dixie devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family. She was a faithful wife and a loving mother to Lance, Penny, and Chad. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles McDowell; her sisters, Mary Griffith (John) and Linda Price; and her brother, Gene Fisher.

She leaves behind a legacy that continues through her children: Lance McDowell (Mary Beth), Penny McDowell, and Chad McDowell (Jennifer); her grandchildren, Joshua McDowell (Caroline), Jacob McDowell (Sarah), Benjamin McDowell (Katie), Seth McDowell, Mallory Warren (Matt), Logan Arnold, Martin McDowell, Molly McDowell, and Megan McDowell; and her great-grandchildren, Bethany McDowell, Charlie McDowell, Veva McDowell, Stephen McDowell, Joanna Joy McDowell, Maddox McDowell, Marin Warren, and Mack Warren.

Affectionately known as Momma, Mawmaw Mac, MawMaw, Booey, Dixie, and Ms. Dixie, she was truly larger than life, though she rarely made life about herself. Dixie was selfless at her core. She was a devoted wife, a fiercely loving mother to Lance, Penny, and Chad, and the loudest and proudest supporter at every ballgame, cheer competition, and school event.

Her home was filled with piano music, singing, laughter, and even the occasional ball game in the house, along with the unmistakable aroma of her fried chicken. She kept a pantry stocked with cupcakes, Ding Dongs, and Twinkies and, over the years, became a second mom to countless neighborhood kids who always knew they were welcome. She was funny, quick-witted, and carried an infectious laugh that could fill a room as easily as her personality did.

She loved time around the table with family and friends, playing board and card games. She also cherished her time on the tennis court, where her competitive spirit shone just as brightly. She played to win and didn’t enjoy losing, but more than anything, she never wanted to miss out on the fun.

Always sharply dressed and adorned with bold, bright jewelry to match every outfit, Dixie carried herself with unmistakable style and presence. She proudly reigned as “Queen Dixie” of the Red Hat Society’s Dixie Darlings. She especially cherished her weekly Thursday outings with her best friend, Ms. Iris, where they enjoyed hair and nail appointments, lunch at Gibbons, and shopping until they dropped.

And yes, she was known for getting wherever she was going with enthusiasm. With a confident right foot and turns that could come without much warning, she drove the way she lived, fully committed and never halfway.

A celebration of Dixie’s life will be held on Friday, February 27 2026, at Calvary Baptist Church, 9333 Linwood Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana 71106. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., with the service to follow at 12:00 noon.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Academy, 9333 Linwood Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana 71106.
