DOLORES JEANETTE USHRY was born Tuesday, November 21, 1939, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Hazel M. Shaw and Louis B. Smith. Dolores was a graduate of The Rayen High School, Class of 1957, in Youngstown. Upon graduation, Dolores enlisted in the United States Air Force as a member of the Women's Air Corps (WAC). As a WAC, Dolores rose to Airman 1st Class before leaving the Air Force, after two years. In Denver, Colorado, while stationed at Lowery AFB, she met Walter D. Ushry and born of them was their first son, Jeffrey.
Dolores continued her service with the government as an employee of the United States Postal Service in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Ushry family then was stationed at Lockbourne AFB in Columbus, Ohio, and was then blessed with the arrival of their second son, Tyrone. After moves back to both Cincinnati and Columbus, the family then was stationed at Grissom AFB in Indiana.
Dolores continued her government service starting as a clerk in the Civilian Personnel Department. She finished her government service, of thirty years, as a Human Resource Officer, first at Rickenbacker AFB and subsequently, at DFAS Columbus.
Dolores was a member of the Harvey Alston VFW, VFW Women's Auxiliary, and was a former Board member of the Retired Armed Forces Association (R.A.F.A.). She enjoyed many bus trips, whether to casinos or visiting other out-of-town VFW posts.
Dolores was an avid fisherman who loved fishing the many waterways of Ohio and included as far as the Chesapeake Bay and the St. Lawrence Seaway. These fishing excursions resulted in an annual fish fry that many family members, friends, and the entire Berwyn neighborhood came to look forward to for more than twenty years. Thanksgiving and Christmas were truly the highlight of her year as she loved cooking holiday dinners and doting on her grandchildren.
Blessed with eighty-three years of life, our beloved Dolores J. Ushry departed this life on Saturday, January 14, 2023. Dolores was proceeded in death by her parents, Hazel M. Shaw and Louis B. Smith; her husband, Walter D. Ushry; daughter, Tina; and brother, Eugene M. Shaw.
Loving memories are cherished by her sons, Jeffrey (Turallynn) Ushry, Sr. and Tyrone (Cicily) Ushry; grandsons, Jeffrey II and Alexander Ushry; granddaughters, Melita Freeman and Jordan Curtis; special friend, Oddie Sanders; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and dear friends.
