Mrs Yates was delightful. My sisters and I took lessons from her. Since my dad passed when I was young, sometimes things were tight for our mom who was raising us single. One time mom’s car broke down, and Mrs. Yates came and picked up all three of us for lessons. She was very gracious in that way. When I would go to her house for lessons, her husband would tutor me on my geometry, and she always had baskets full of fruit for us because we had to wait for our sisters before we got our lesson. I also remember that she could accompany singers at the church with absolutely no music she could just follow them along. God bless Mrs. Yates.

Dolores Yates was a very giving woman and an encourager. I was blessed to receive piano lessons from her in exchange for house cleaning. She taught me so much more than just the piano! Her love of the Lord spilt out to everyone!

By a sheet coincidence, today I was nudged to look up my childhood music teacher. I "googled" Dolores Yates, and discovered that she passed away just a few days ago. I took lessons from her in Olympia, WA, for at least 7 years from about 1976-1983, and remember well her living room studio with the grand piano, organ, and harpsichord - which students were allowed to play every once in a while if we had mastered a piece that suited it well. Mrs. Yates had a very formal style, always wearing a skirt suit for lessons, and referring to herself in the third person, "Mrs. Yates would like you to try that again," which is humorous to think back on. She was unfailingly kind, patient, and encouraging. She taught me to read music very well, and to this day am so grateful for her instruction. Music has been a big part of my life since my lessons from her more than 40 years ago. I wish I had thought to send her a thank-you card while she was living. I will always remember her when I play piano.
