Doma F. Blalock

Blalock, Doma Elizabeth Ferguson of Baskerville, Virginia, passed away in her home, Eureka, Wednesday night, December 11, 2024.
She was predeceased by her high school sweetheart and husband of 65 years, William E. (Bill) Blalock, and her forever best friend and classmate, Gloria Whitley Evans, of South Hill. She is survived by her cherished daughter, Scarlett B. Courter and husband Carlton, and beloved grandson, James Carlton (Carl) Courter, IV. Graduating from South Hill High School at 16, Doma studied art at R.P.I. (now VCU) and was an early graduate of Pan American Business School in Richmond, VA. Fiercely independent and self-confident, she proudly told others that at 18 she was making her own living as an executive secretary. She was a faithful wife, loving mother and adoring grandmother. Some of her happiest times were spent making memories with her daughter and grandson. As the #1 babysitter for family and friends, she and Bill also played host to many school children who came to enjoy a farm tour at Park Forest. As an encourager and confidant to many, she would always say, "Things are never as bad as they seem". She was affectionately and respectfully called Miss Doma by friends and family. Doma was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church teaching the little ones, and in later years especially enjoyed the responsibility for Sanctuary flowers every Sunday and the "card" ministry for her Sunday school class. She and Bill were choir members all their married life. Although cooking was her least favorite thing, she was a "made from scratch" cook and many would look forward to her signature dishes, especially her 3 hour baked apples and sweet potato dishes. In later years, she enjoyed having her coffee and newspaper on her open porch among her flowers, where she and her cats would bird watch. Doma loved many things, children, history, antiques, flowers, jewelry, good food and good music (she knew a song for every occasion), mystery novels, old western movies, nice linens, good manners, doilies, a good laugh and had a cheering passion for DUKE basketball. She appreciated the beauty of nature, birds, wildflowers, trees, and especially a walk in falling snow, and having the biggest Christmas tree her house could hold. Traditional family gatherings were always enjoyed, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was predeceased by her parents, George Rowley and Mary Emma Ferguson, her twin sisters, Joan F. Cleaton (Walter) and Jean F. Farrar (Herbert), and sister, Mary Edith F. Crowder (Max). One surviving sibling is her brother, George R. Ferguson, Jr. (Christine), a special niece, Beth Farrar Lett, whom she thought of as another daughter, and many special nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Monday, December 16, 2024 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, Baskerville, Va. Funeral services will be held immediately after visitation with interment following in the church cemetery.
