Dominic Seraphin Obituary
Dominic Stephen Seraphin passed away peacefully on July 8, 2022 in Kensington, Maryland, surrounded by his loving family. Dominic was born in Alleppey, Kerala, located in Southern India and journeyed to study a new field and create a new life in a new country.
Born to Dominic and Annie Chiraparambil, Dominic excelled in his studies, graduated from Sanatana Dharma College in Alleppey and St. Xavier's College in Bombay, and was a Professor of Mathematics at South Indian Education Society (SIES) College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Bombay.
Dominic married Mary (Molly) King of Trivandrum, Kerala in 1961, and resided in Bombay, where they both taught at SIES College. In 1967, he received a scholarship to pursue graduate studies at Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY. He came to the US, established himself, and then brought his wife and two young children. After graduating in 1969 with a master's degree in Applied Analysis in the then-new Computer Science graduate program, he secured a job as a Programmer Analyst in the Computing Center at the university.
Over the course of his career, Dominic advanced to the position of Director of Systems Support, retiring in 2003. Dominic and family were honored by Stony Brook University for his lifelong commitment to the university and three of his four children also attended the institution for their undergraduate studies.
The family resided in Port Jefferson Station, NY for 31 years. In 1979, Dominic and Mary became proud naturalized US citizens. He was an active parishioner at St. Gerard Majella Roman Catholic Church in Terryville, NY. As a devout Roman Catholic, Dominic turned to prayer to help guide his many life decisions. He was a member and treasurer of the Knights of Columbus and became an Honorary Life Member of the organization.
Dominic and Mary met other Indian immigrants and created a new close-knit extended family and community. He was a loyal friend and beloved uncle to many in this community.
After retiring, Dominic and Mary moved to Timonium, MD to be close to their children and many grandchildren and eventually moved to senior living communities in Silver Spring and then Kensington.
He leaves behind his wife, Mary Molly Seraphin, four children, Vinod (Mary Anne) Seraphin of Westford, MA, Suresh Dominic (Lori) Seraphin of Baltimore, MD, Dr. Arun (Rose) Seraphin of Centreville, VA, and Dr. Letha (Theisen) Healey of Kensington, MD, and known as "Apapa" to fourteen grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Kiran Theisen Healey, and his only sibling, C. D. Oommachen.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 16, at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church (9705 Summit Avenue, Kensington, MD) with a viewing one hour prior.
