Don RolandOf Indian TrailDon, age 86, passed away on May 7, 2025.He was born on February 25, 1939, in Herrin, Illinois, son of Herman and Geneva (Stone) Roland.Don served in the US Navy, retiring after 22 years of dedicated service. He served on the USS Tutuila (ARG-4) 1958, USS Bainbridge (CGN-25) 1960, USS Midway (CV-41) 1962-1963 and USS Nereus (AS-17) 1965. After his tour on the USS Nereus (AS-17) 1965, he moved to NC and became recruiter.He was an electrical engineer. He had a talent where he could fix anything! Don was strong in his faith and member of Indian Trail United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family. His favorite pastimes were fishing and watching NASCAR.Don is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Shirley (Younts) Roland; children, Tammy Russett (Eric) and Kimberly Sherrill (Kevin); grandchildren, James and Paige Smith, Ashlyn Penegar (Justin), Noah Smith (Kayla), Carmen Bowers (Brad) and Eli Russett (Hannah); great-grandchildren, Matthew, Briar, Mason, Madelyn, Blakely and Grayson. Mr. Roland was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Geneva Roland; step-daughter, Pamela K. Smith; siblings, Chuck Roland, Sue Ellingsworth and Roger Roland.His service will be privately held.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Indian Trail UMC.
