The following is an obituary written by Don’s loving family.

Donald Berkey, 88 of Pittsboro, Indiana, passed from this earth to his heavenly home peacefully on the early morning of December 19th, 2025. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Judy, and son, Jeff Berkey. Don is survived by his son, Greg; daughter-in-law, Ronda; granddaughter, Hannah; and grandson, Seth.

Don was born in his parents’ house on Main Street of his hometown of Pittsboro. He graduated from Pittsboro High School and then entered the United States Air Force where he served his country for four years, being stationed in England for much of his tour of duty. After his military service Don returned to his hometown and began working for Coca Cola as a machine repair man and then worked for Eagle Machine Company of Indianapolis before beginning a 28-year career with Allisons in Speedway.

Don was known as a hard worker and loving husband and father. In 1964 he made the life-changing decision to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and became very active in local church ministries at Bethesda Baptist Church, Colonial Hills Baptist Church, and Pittsboro Baptist Church. He served as a church bus driver for over 30 years along with serving as a church usher during those years. He loved the Lord and his church families.

He loved the outdoors with camping and canoeing all over the state with his family and friends. In his retirement years he enjoyed traveling across the state in his 1941 Ford Street Rod with his wife, Judy. He loved life, the Lord, and his family and friends. He was always known as a “great guy”. He will be greatly missed, but his family looks forward to seeing him again in that great reunion time in glory.

Friends and family will gather on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Eric M.D. Bell Funeral Home, for visitation from 10 am to 12 pm.  The funeral service with military honors will begin at 12 pm.  Don will be laid to rest alongside his wife, Judy, and son, Jeff, with a private burial at K of P Cemetery in Lizton, Indiana.

All are encouraged to keep Don's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of loss.
