Donald George Byrnes, age 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was the son of the late Russell J. Byrnes and Lottie M. (Iwuc) Byrnes.

Donald was born in Pawtucket, RI, on September 12, 1946, and grew up in South Attleboro, MA. He graduated from Attleboro High School and proudly served his country as a combat veteran in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned multiple awards for heroism and meritorious achievement in battle. He attended Boston University and UMass Boston, where he earned his bachelor's degree.

Donald worked in various branches of the Massachusetts government, as well as for the United States Postal Service, the IRS, and The Faxon Co., Inc. in Westwood, MA. He retired as a tax return specialist for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Donald had a sharp mind for numbers, which made him highly effective in his chosen vocations. He also had a deep passion for sports, with an exceptional memory for player and team statistics. He was a devoted fan and supporter of all four New England professional sports teams.

During his high school years, Don worked as a pizza cook at Jolly Cholly's in North Attleboro. He also enjoyed many happy times singing karaoke, especially hits by the Rolling Stones. With the benefit of some lottery winnings, Don took the trip of a lifetime to Ireland, the land of his father's ancestors.

Beloved brother of William R. Byrnes of Sandwich and the late Russell J. Byrnes, Jr. Loving uncle of Erica, Shane, Adam, and the late Rebecca. Also survived by many loving cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, from 4–7 PM at the Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South Street, Foxborough. An interment with United States Army honors will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 1:30 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, off Connery Avenue in Bourne.
