Peter H. DeVeber, “Bumpy” to his adored grandchildren, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, friend, talented writer, painter, music producer, jeweler and publicist passed away on September 25, 2025 at the age 85 after, a life well-lived with thousands of popsicles eaten, innumerable jokes told, and 347,520 miles driven on his precious Toyota Camry.

Born on December 10, 1939 in Rockland, Maine, he dedicated his life to his passions, including a love for creating beauty with his art and writings which will continue to touch the lives and hearts of many.

He was the devoted husband of 62 years to his beloved wife, Jean, the love of his life. The love and laughter they shared is an inspiration to all who knew them. Their bond exemplified commitment and joy creating a warm and welcoming home that was a refuge for family and friends. His family was his pride and joy and he adored spending time with his grandchildren, always bringing laughter and warmth to their lives with his grand sense of humor and unmatched storytelling.

A son of peripatetic educators, Peter grew up and attended schools across Maine and Massachusetts between Houlton, Maine and Bridgewater, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school in 1958, Peter briefly attended Bates College and Boston University before enlisting in the United States Army, 3rd Infantry, The Old Guard, Fort Myer, Virginia from 1961 to 1964. While there, he was witness to and participated in such historic and momentous events as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the State Funeral of President John F. Kennedy.

After leaving the Army, Peter settled in Stoughton, Massachusetts where he lived for more than fifty years. Peter spent 18 years in the jewelry business as a designer for Romm & Co before spending a decade with the middleweight champion of the world, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, as his publicist.

In 1999, Peter and Jean found Lubec, Maine where they made many happy memories with family and forged a rich social and artistic life with many wonderful friendships. An avid writer, Peter found joy in crafting daily haikus, capturing moments of beauty and reflection. He cherished trips to Downeast Maine, where he found tranquility and inspiration for his two poetry collections - Lady on the Narrows and Miles to Go.

He also indulged his creative interests as a supporter of live music. Peter’s lifelong love of jazz was sparked after attending the inaugural Newport Jazz Festival in 1958. He produced two CDs - My Buddy and Broken Dreams - and an annual jazz concert series in Lubec, Maine for a decade. He was also known for his many exquisite jazz portraits.

We will miss you Peter, Dad, Bumpy. You are all this and more. You exemplified genuine kindness and generosity and had a lasting impact on those who knew you! We love you! Stay with the pitch.
