Donald L. 'Don' Carroll, age 76, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully, after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
Born in Grafton, WV on May 15, 1948, he was a son of the late William Warden Carroll and Mary Virginia (Reed) Jenkins. Don proudly served in the United States Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He made his career as a railroad locomotive engineer for CSX.
Don was a lifetime member of the Solomon Lodge No. 36 – FreeMasons of Newark, DE. A passionate golfer, Don spent countless hours on the course, perfecting his game and enjoying the camaraderie it brought. He shared a remarkable 60-year journey with his beloved wife, Cindy, to whom he was married for 54 years. Don had a deep love for Mountaineers football and cherished the time spent with his friends and family. His loyal dog, Willow, also held a special place in his heart.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his sister, Loretta Hebb and brother, Dick Carroll. He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Hayes Carroll; children, Lisa DiGiacomo (Michael) of Hockessin and Daniel L. Carroll (Karen Sullivan) of Elsmere; siblings, Jeannie Hoff (Denny), Lou Ann Harris (Ken); and grandchildren, Lucas, Alex, Jesse, Jack and Sophia.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. A committal service will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
