Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford
Donald Cox, age 94, was born on September 15, 1929, in Senatobia, Mississippi, and passed away at home on March 8, 2024, in Oxford, Mississippi. Don was a loving, devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.
Don grew up in Senatobia, Mississippi, the youngest of eight children. He was industrious at a young age, in addition to attending school and working at various jobs he enjoyed participating in mutiple sports. His passion was playing football, serving as a team captain at Senatobia High School and Northwest High School and Northwest Junior College. He also played the cornet in the high school band.
He served his country on active military duty as a member of the Second Infantry Division during the Korean War for two years (1950-52). After returning from Korea to Mississippi, he married his sweetheart Beatrice Edlin in 1953; they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in December of last year. They lived in Memphis, Tennessee and most of Don's professional career included a role as President of Kemmons Wilson Insurance Agency. He embraced his occupation and made memorable and long-lasting friendships with colleagues and clients. Shortly after his retirement in 1995, he and Bea moved to Oxford, Mississippi.
Additional interests included coaching junior league football, traveling with his wife, upland bird hunting and homebuilding for a series of his and Bea's residences. His Christian faith was central to his life and he and Bea developed numerous wonderful friendships through church connections. His final church relationship was with First Baptist Church in Oxford, where he served as a deacon. He was also a long-time member of the Masons and a Baylor Bear sports fan, de facto.
Survivors include his wife Bea, his son Keith (Rei), and beloved nieces who affectionately refer to him as "Uncle Don."
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Carroll Cocke and Beatrice Edna Cocke, his brothers Leo, Kerr, David, and Carroll Cocke, and his sisters Velma Burford, Arthenia Hensley, and Wylerdean Boatright, as well as by two children, Annie Cox and Glynn Carroll Cox.
Friends and Family will gather for a memorial service at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford, 601 Commerce Parkway, Oxford, Mississippi, on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. Immediately following the memorial service, and at the same venue, the Family will host a time to visit and share memories with lunch provided from 12:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M.
