Donald James
Of Southampton, New Jersey, formerly of Denver Colorado. Passed away on June 21, 2022. Born on March 16, 1935, in Drexel Hill, PA. he is the youngest son of Jesse Herbert and Hazel Rose Grant (nee Enborg). Don graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1954. Like his brother, father, and grandfather before him, he became an engineer. Don earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958. He served in the US Army as an engineer specialist 4th class. Following his discharge in 1960, he went to work for the family construction business, G&H Steel Service, Inc. working in heavy construction in 35 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Donald was posted in San Juan to start his career followed by Toronto Canada where he obtained his professional engineering license. He supervised the construction work on projects such as the Forked River Nuclear Power Station, Denver International Airport, Metro-Atlanta Subway among others.
Using the VA bill he earned flight certifications in single engine, multi-engine, sea plane and rotary wing aircraft. His participated as flight crew in a world speed record set on 23 March 1982 for circumnavigating the globe in 109 hours 22 mins in a twin turboprop Piper Cheyenne.
His career spanned 55 years and concluded as a construction analyst for the USDA in 2019 in New Jersey. Following retirement, he became active in restoration of railcars and locomotives that may be seen at the Newtown Square Railroad Museum, Newtown Square Pennsylvania.
Don is predeceased by his wife Ruth Marie (nee Gola) and son Scott Edward. He is survived by his children Donald James (Mary), Kelly Lynn Brown (James), Colleen Louise Kau (Michael), five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
