Donald Leo Hays, 90, of Glen Ellyn, IL, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, after a series of health challenges. Born in Buffalo, New York, Don's life was a journey marked by devotion, adventure, family, and a boundless capacity to connect with others-no matter where life took him.
Don's journey carried him through many chapters: from Buffalo to Bronxville, NY, the Philippines, CT, NJ, OH, MN, AZ, IN, and IL. He served his country as a U.S. Navy Lieutenant, a role that instilled in him a sense of honor and discipline that would remain for life. A proud graduate of Manhattan College in New York City, Don brought his sharp mind and easy humor to the world of business, spending much of his career with White Motors and White Farm Equipment, eventually becoming Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. His professional path was not without its twists-when the company was sold, Don embarked on a new career, eventually retiring from AGT, where he sold interactive phone response systems.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ellen Marie (Nilan), with whom he built a family and a lifetime of memories; his daughter, Linda Hays; his parents Joseph and Eileen Hays; his brothers, Joseph (Bud) Hays of Buffalo, NY and Bob Hays of Houston, TX, and his sister, Noreen McCarthy of Columbus, OH.
Don's heart and home remained full thanks to his cherished, Kathy Culumber, who brought him joy and laughter in his later years. He is also survived by his children Deborah Holbrook, Joseph Hays (Julie Miller-Hays), Laura Hays, Ann Hiltenbrand (Mike Hiltenbrand), Noreen Hays (John Morissette); by his treasured grandchildren, Devin, Collin, Brenden, Kailey, Nolan, Connor, Riley, and Karina, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Those who knew Don, knew a man of deep Catholic faith and quick wit. He lived not just by words, but by action-always ready to lend a hand, share a story, or draw a smile from someone who needed it. Family gatherings - often lively, always filled with laughter and too much food - were among his greatest joys, and his circle of friends was as wide as it was dear. He had a knack for making everyone feel like they belonged, and for finding humor in even the most trying situations.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E Roosevelt Rd, Wheaton, IL 60187. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church, 480 S Park Blvd, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. Interment will follow at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, 911 North Ave, Naperville, IL 60540.
In keeping with Don's generous spirit, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, you honor him by giving your time, talent, or resources to a cause that speaks to your heart.
