Donald Hickey Obituary

Visit the Schmidt Funeral Home - Grand Parkway - Katy website to view the full obituary.
Don Hickey was a devoted Christian, Air Force veteran, husband, stepfather, grandfather, and lifelong learner from Raymondville, Texas. Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley as the youngest of nine children to Cecilia and Maurice Hickey. Don grew up on the family farm and often spoke of the deep Christian values his parents instilled in him.

He served 24 years in the U.S. Air Force before retiring and remained an active ham radio operator throughout his military and civilian life. A voracious reader, Don prayed the Liturgy of the Hours twice daily and studied the Bible, Canon Law, the Church Fathers, lives of the saints, and any books recommended by his oldest brother, Fr. John Hickey. He loved listening to and singing Christian and country music, traveled extensively both with the Air Force and personally, and was known for praying for everyone he met-even strangers.

Don and his wife Irene were married 16 years. He is survived by his stepson Jeremy Salazar and daughter-in-law Wendy, and two granddaughters, Avani and Alina Salazar, and two brothers Lawrence and Deacon Dennis Hickey. He is remembered for his faith, warmth, and steadfast devotion to family and the Church.
