Donald Lee Smith, known affectionately to friends and family as Don, passed away on October 7, 2025, at the age of 70. Born on October 11, 1954, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, Don's life was a testament to the strength, resilience, and warmth that he carried with him through all his years. His passing in Justice, Illinois, after a courageous battle with bone marrow cancer, leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and memories cherished by all who knew him.
Beloved husband of Kimberly Cummings. Loving dad of Theresa (Tom) Van Prooyen, Jacqueline Cummings, Jennifer Cummings (Lonnie Cox), Robert Cummings, Sarah Cummings (Matthew Bailey), Kimberly (Jose) Garcia and Thomas Cummings. Loving grandpa of Tony, Avery, Jillian, Zeke, Adalina and Nathan. Dear brother of Barbara Alfieri. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Don dedicated 34 years of his life to working on the railroad, a career that was not just a job but a passion. His commitment to his work was paralleled only by his involvement in various associations related to his profession, where he was respected and admired for his work ethic and camaraderie. Don's colleagues knew him as a man who could always be relied upon, a friend who would lend an ear or a hand without hesitation.
Beyond his professional life, Don was a man of many interests. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace and joy in hunting and fishing, pursuits that allowed him to embrace the beauty of nature and the thrill of the chase. His love for the outdoors was matched by his passion for photography, capturing moments of splendor in the natural world and the candid beauty of family gatherings.
A lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears, Don's enthusiasm for his team was infectious. He shared his love for football with friends and family, making game days into memorable occasions. His collection of model trains was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of his lifelong fascination with the railways and his attention to detail.
Don's greatest joy, however, was found in the time he spent with his beloved grandchildren and stepchildren. Each moment with them was cherished, each laugh treasured, each lesson imparted with love. His role as a family man was one he embraced wholeheartedly, providing guidance, support, and unconditional love.
Those who knew Don will remember him as a loving, kind, and thoughtful man. He approached life with a gentle demeanor and a generous heart, always putting others before himself. His presence was a source of comfort and stability, and his absence will be deeply felt by all.
As we say goodbye to Donald Lee Smith, we celebrate the life he lived and the countless ways he enriched the lives of those around him. He will be remembered not just for what he did, but for who he was-a man of integrity, warmth, and unwavering kindness. Don's legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of his friends, family, and all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
