Donald Thomas Turner, known affectionately as Don to his friends and family, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and 5 children on November 23, 2024, at his home in Old Bridge, NJ. Born on June 28, 1944, in Newark, NJ, Don's life was a testament to the love and laughter he shared with everyone he met.
Donald was the son of the late James and Jacqueline McMenamin. His journey through life was one of devotion and joy, especially shared with his high school sweetheart and wife of 56 years, Elaine. Together, they nurtured a loving family, including their four daughters, Deana Marie Balas (Jeff), Traci Ann Feliu (Izzy), Christine Smith (Don), and Donna Turner, and their son, Donald Jr (Angela). Don's legacy continued to grow with the addition of his 13 grandchildren, Kali, Dylan, Brian, Declan, Blake, Camryn, Sofia, Donald III, Carter, Daniella, Beau, Jayce, and Siddalee, who will cherish their memories of him.
He was a beloved brother to Gail (Arthur), Cindy, Jimmy (Linda), Timmy (Mary Jo), and Dennis (Mary), and a treasured brother-in-law to Joseph and Leona. His extended family included many nieces, nephews, cousins, "bonus grandchildren," and a circle of lifelong friends who will miss his presence dearly.
Before retiring in 2004, Don's career as a tractor-trailer driver for USF Red Star Express was marked by his commitment to his colleagues and the Teamsters Local 560. His dedication to his work was recognized when he was honored as the 1985 NJ State Trucking Champion, a proud moment that exemplified his professionalism and skill.
Don's passion for music led him to form the North Jersey Express band in 1970's where he showcased his talents as a singer and keyboard player. His musical journey brought joy to many across New Jersey, as he performed at bars and receptions, leaving a lasting impression with his melodies.
His voice was not only known for singing but also for announcing, as he became the familiar voice of the Old Bridge Rams Pop Warner program on Sundays. His involvement went beyond the microphone as he served as President and Football Commissioner, demonstrating his commitment to his community.
You could find him often tinkering with his vast collection of historical Lionel trains. An avid boater and fisherman, Don found happiness on the waters of the Jersey Shore. Summers were a special time for him, as he enjoyed vacations with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His presence on the boardwalk, with a bucket of curly fries and a smile, became a cherished memory for all who accompanied him.
Described as loving, funny, and a man who can fix anything, Don's ability to bring warmth and laughter into any room was unmatched and his life was a journey filled with love, family, music, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
