Donald James Winnie, a cherished soul known for his loving nature and infectious humor, passed away on November 11, 2025, in
Westland, Michigan. Born on February 15, 1955, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Donald's life was a testament to the joy and warmth he brought into the lives of those around him.
Donald's early years in Ypsilanti were filled with the laughter and love of a close-knit family. He shared a special bond with his brother, Robert Winnie whom he shared many of his most cherished memories with. His life was enriched by the marriage to his beloved wife, Susann, with whom he shared 39 years of devoted companionship before her passing. Together, they raised three wonderful children, Melissa (Jason) Loveland, Lori Winnie, and Edward (Jamie) Winnie, who remember their father as a pillar of strength and kindness.
A doting grandfather, Donald's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Mariah Loveland, Jordan Denton, Emily Loveland, Jacob Loveland, Malachi Winnie, Carter Winnie, Isaac Winnie, and Olivia Winnie. His presence in their lives was a source of endless joy and wisdom. Each of them cherished the moments spent with their grandpa, who always had a story or a joke to share.
He also had a special place in his heart for his cousin, Lesha Winnie, who will remember him for his unwavering support and infectious laughter.
Donald's love for his family was matched only by his passion for the great outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he spent many contented hours in pursuit of deer, pheasant, and rabbit, or waiting for the perfect catch on the serene lakes of Michigan. His love for sports was evident as a die-hard fan of the Detroit Redwings, the Detroit Lions, and University of Michigan football. His spirit soared when he was cheering on his favorite teams, and he shared this enthusiasm with all who knew him.
The cabin in Harrison and the ice-fishing expeditions in Indian River held a special place in Donald's heart. These retreats up north were more than just pastimes; they were the settings of cherished memories and stories that would be told and retold for years to come.
Donald's work with painting anything in construction reflected his strong sense of community and his desire to connect with others. He was a friendly face, a helping hand, and a source of laughter and support for many.
The void left by Donald's passing is felt deeply by his family, including his loyal dog, Molly, who was a constant companion and source of comfort, especially after his wife's passing. Donald's spirit, however, remains undiminished in the hearts of those who loved him.
Donald was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Susann Winnie; his devoted mother, Ruth Winnie; his caring second mother, Lucille Winnie, his father, Donald Winnie; and his sister in law Kathy Winnie. His memory will be honored and kept alive through the stories and love he left behind.
In every interaction, Donald exemplified the qualities of a loving, funny, and friendly individual. His great spirit and love for everyone he met made him a beloved figure in his community. Donald's passing is not just the loss of a man but the dimming of a light that shone brightly in the lives of his family and friends. His laughter, love, and legacy will be cherished forever.
