The funeral services for Donald A. Zetterlund, 99, Leola will be 10:30 am, Monday, October 30, 2023 at the Leola United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Peck officiating. Burial at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola with military honors by Roy S. Hickman American Legion Post 78. Donald died on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Visitation will be 3:00-6:00 pm, Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street.
Donald Arthur Zetterlund was born to Hans Arthur and Blanche (Price) Zetterlund at Pipestone, MN on August 22, 1924. He attended Pipestone public school working in the family road construction business at a young age during the summer months and full time after graduating from school.
Donald met Hazel Zantow at a dance at the Leola Masonic Lodge while the crew was graveling Highway 10 in the McPherson County area. Before he could marry the love of his life Don fulfilled his commitment to his country entering the Army on May 26th, 1943 at Fort Snelling, MN. He was sent to Texas for basic training and as a Private assigned to Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, Calif. for eight weeks medical tech. training. He served as a Medical Tech Fifth Grade in five major base hospitals two in the United States and fifteen months in hospitals in Germany, England, and France until he was honorably discharged at Camp Mc Coy, Wisconsin on April 30th, 1946. Upon his return to Pipestone he rejoined his family in the road construction business.
Donald and Hazel (Zantow) were married November 24, 1946, in Pipestone, MN. and continued with the family road construction business. Their first two children were born during this time. After the family decided to quit road construction, Don and Hazel farmed in the Pipestone, MN area for several years where their other children were born. They moved to Leola in 1956 to the same farm where Hazel was born and raised, continuing to live and farm there until July 26, 2023, when at the ages of 99 years and 102 years they moved to Mother Joseph Nursing Home in Aberdeen, SD.
Donald served on the Leola school board, Leola United Methodist Church board, 4H leader (when children were young), Better Leola Club and he is believed to be the last Leola World War II veteran members of the Roy S. Hickman post #78.
Grateful for having shared Donald's life are his wife of 76 years, Hazel. Sons, Gordon wife Tess Zetterlund of Leola and Terry wife Terry Linn of Aberdeen, SD Grandchildren Tammy (Keith) Rutherford, Sara (Tyler) Eslinger, Katie (Dylan) Roberson, Christian and Charity Zetterlund and Great Grandchildren Landon and Bennett Rutherford, Cora Hazel and Noelle Roberson and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Don in death were his parents, infant daughter Donna, son Dale and daughter Jean and husband Lawrence Juneau Jr. Sisters Ruth and husband Dean Sorenson and June and husband Wayne Leopold and Brothers Richard and wife Mavis, and Gerald, Stanley and Ron Zetterlund.
