Visitation will be 3:00-6:00pm Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, Aberdeen, SD.
Hazel Anne (Zantow) Zetterlund was born to Paul and Lena (Krause) Zantow May 12, 1921 at her parents' farm home in Washington Township south of Leola, SD in McPherson County. Her mother died in 1937 when Hazel was 16 years of age. Hazel attended country school and graduated from Leola public high school in 1938, she attended Northern Normal (now Northern University) for one year. Upon receiving her teaching certificate, she taught rural schools in the Leola, Edmonds County and Brown County area for seven years.
While attending a dance at the Masonic Lodge in Leola, Hazel met her future husband Donald Zetterlund when his family's road construction crew were graveling Hi-way 10 in McPherson County. He asked her to dance and she answered, "I don't know how", so they just sat and talked. The couple corresponded as they each continued their current occupations until the war called Don into the Army. They waited to marry until Don returned from his military service. Upon his honorable discharge at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin in April of 1946, he returned to Pipestone where he rejoined his family in the road construction business. Donald and Hazel were married November 24, 1946, in Pipestone, MN. and continued with the family road construction business. Their first two children were born during this time. After the family decided to quit road construction, Don and Hazel farmed in the Pipestone, MN area for several years where their other children were born. They moved to Leola in September of 1956 to the farm where Hazel was born and continued to live at their farm home until Don's week of hospitalization July 2023. After Don was released from hospital, Hazel 102 years and Don 99 years, moved into Mother Joseph Nursing Home in Aberdeen, SD.
Hazel was an active member of the Leola United Methodist Church holding offices in church women's mission groups, was involved in PTA and as a 4H leader when her children were young. Her life joys were reading the Bible, her family, baking bread and making sure no one left the table hungry, gardening to the age of 100, quilting, "eeking" a garment out of a piece of fabric for her children or grandchildren, completing the daily newspaper crossword puzzle or a jig saw puzzles with Don or family.
Grateful and blessed for having shared her life are her sons: Gordon (Tess) Zetterlund of Leola, SD. and Terry (Terry Linn) Zetterlund of Aberdeen, SD. Grandchildren Tammy (Keith) Rutherford, Sara (Tyler) Eslinger, and Katie (Dylan) Roberson, Christian and Charity Zetterlund. Great Grandchildren Landon and Bennett Rutherford, Cora Hazel and Noelle Roberson and Step Grandson Azrael Eslinger and numerous nieces and nephews.
