Mr. Donnie Lee Matthews, 82, of Robinwood Lane, Elberton, husband of Sue Nash Matthews, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024, at his residence, with his family at his side.

Mr. Matthews was born in Elberton on June 23, 1941, only child of the late Edwin Harper Matthews and Guynell Childers Matthews. He was a 1960 graduate of Elbert County High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army. Donnie worked in the granite industry for most of his life, retiring as a salesman.

He was a member of Elberton Christian Church and former member of the Jaycees. Donnie was a former Elbert County Little League coach and an avid pool player. “Pop” never missed an opportunity to support his family in any of their endeavors, and could always be found on the sidelines of any sporting event in which they were participating.

In addition to Sue, his wife of 60 1/2 years, he is survived by his children and their spouses: David and Bridgette Matthews and Nikki and Steele Mills, all of Elberton; grandchildren: Dillon Matthews, Walker Bryant, Branson Mills, Palmer Matthews, Harrison Matthews, Matthew Coker, Remi Mills, and Bristol Mills; and three great-granddaughters. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Dina Lynn Matthews.

The family is at the residence on Robinwood Lane and will receive friends on Wednesday, May 15, from 5:00-7:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.

Memorial services celebrating Donnie’s life will be held on Thursday, May 16, at 11:00a.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Cox officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made his memory to Elberton Christian Church, 1128 Calhoun Falls Highway, Elberton, GA 30635 or to First Baptist Church of Elberton Ramp Ministry, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, GA 30635.
