The Legacy & Life Story of Dora F. Williams
Dora Finny Williams, daughter of the late Mamie and Pink Childs, was born in Greenwood, South Carolina on April 15, 1933. The youngest of nine children, including John, Jean, Claude, William, Idamae, Ruth, Bufora, and Maggie, the family relocated to Philadelphia, where Dora would spend much of her life. She attended the Philadelphia Public Schools and at age 17, Dora married John Shivers Sr. From their union, three sons were born, John, Irvin (Skippy), and Angelo (Collie). Sadly, in 1971, her middle son died, although not before giving her a grandson in 1970. Prior to Skippy's death, Dora's daughters, Tammy and Robin, were born and raised by her and Robert (Bobby) Clack. Dora and Bobby would marry later in their adulthood.
Dora, a mother of five, loved dressing up, jewelry, and driving Cadillacs. She also loved to travel, with several memorable trips taken from Philadelphia to California on a Greyhound bus to see her son, Collie, and his family. She went on local trips with her family, including visits to Wildwood and Atlantic City beaches. Dora was a member of Mt. Sinai church, where she learned the power of faith. As an emblem of her faith, she carried a mustard seed in her bosom. She taught her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren about how the small measure of faith could move mountains. Dora was feisty, some would even say that she was a "hell-raiser", although those who knew her heart recognized that she was a kind soul who opened her doors to everyone and would feed anyone. Her affection for people extended equally to her love for plants. Dora could take the smallest twig and bloom it into something vibrant. And don't even mention her dog Fefe, Dora's loyal pet that loved and called her guard dog in the 90s. Dora was born into a large family and outlived both her parents and all her siblings. Though saddened by the loss of her loved ones, Dora's life was enriched by her children, 22 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren. At nearly 92 years old, Dora held a sharp mind and clever tongue. On March 31, 2025, the heavens opened, and the gates swung wide and ushered Dora home. The last of the Childs' children, Dora joined her husband Bobby, her parents, her 8 siblings, her son Skippy, her baby girl Robin, and grandchildren, Tamika, Walter III and Larue. She is survived by her sons, John Shivers and Angelo Shivers (Johnnie), her daughter, Tammy Childs, her heart-daughter, Audrey Walker, and bonus-son, Tyrone Clack Jr. Additionally, she leaves behind grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, long-time friend Lena, and many others.
