Doris Boomer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, LLP - West 38th St. on Sep. 2, 2025.
Doris McEntire Skelton Boomer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on August 29, 2025 in Erie, PA. She was born on May 10, 1930 at the McEntire family homestead near Conneaut Lake, PA. Doris was the eldest daughter of Raymond T McEntire and Emma E Calvin.

Doris lived a life filled with love and devotion to her family. To know Doris was to love her. She did not know a stranger, and showed friendship to every person she met. Doris had a contagious laugh and smile that lit up every room. Doris was actively involved in her community. She served as a Girl Scout leader, taught Sunday school, served as a Steven's Minister with the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Erie, PA, and was a lifelong member of Women's Club.

Doris had a deep love and appreciation of children. She dedicated her professional life to teaching, specializing in reading and language arts. Doris attended Kent State University and completed her MA in Education and a Reading Specialist Certificate at Edinboro University. Doris began her elementary teaching career in Espyville, PA. She also taught in Titusville, Mercer, Smethport, and Port Allegany, PA. After 33.5 years of teaching, Doris substituted as a Reading Specialist in Erie Junior High Schools. Doris belonged to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Doris met her future husband, Albert "Bud" Skelton, on their first day of teaching. She was fortunate to spend 42 years sharing their love for family, education, travel, and sports. Doris and Bud were active members of Presbyterian Church, the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, and the American Contract Bridge League. Doris and Bud enjoyed snow skiing at Denton Hill, hiking in the Allegany Mountains, horseback riding on the mountain trails between Smethport and Port Allegany, boating in Kinzua Reservoir, fishing in Lake Kipawa, Quebec, Canada, and traveling throughout the contiguous US, Canada, and Mexico in their Airstream trailer. Doris loved spending time at the McEntire farm harvesting crops, baking, helping her mother with quilting projects, and celebrating holidays with her siblings. After retiring from the Port Allegany School System, Doris and Bud moved to Erie, PA where they resided together until Bud passed in 1997.

In 2000, Doris was fortunate to meet Robert G Boomer while vacationing in the Florida Keys. They were married for 15 years, and enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, and spending their summers in Alaska. Doris and Bob chose to spend their late retirement at Springhill Independent Living Center in Erie, PA together until Bob passed in 2016.

Doris is proceeded in death by her parents, by her brothers, James Fletcher McEntire and Raymond Thomas McEntire, Jr. and by her sister Ruth Elizabeth Cowan. Left to cherish her memory and legacy of love are her three sisters; Rachel Mykrantz, Lydia Caskey and Joann Justice; her children, Susanne (Matthew) Vila, Raymond (Julie) Skelton, Carolyn (Clive) Tattersall, and Elizabeth (Greg) Menio; her beloved grandchildren, Laura (Todd) Vila Rawson, Anthony Vila, Ruthan Skelton, Steven Skelton, Thomas (Cameron) Skelton, Eric (Janda) Tattersall, Mark (Mariah) Tattersall, Russell (Maureen) Tattersall, Gregory (Laura) Menio, Sarah (Patrick) Menio Robinson, Emma (Michael) Menio Mastalish, and Albert Menio, her fourteen precious great grandchildren, nine loving nieces and nephews, and her dear cousin Audrey Sparks.

In appreciation of all the care and support which Doris received while living at Springhill, Doris requested that memorials be given to the Springhill Benevolent Fund. Funeral service to be held Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 11am at Brugger Funeral Home West, Erie, PA.

We were so sorry to hear of Aunt Doris' passing. She was a vivacious woman. We always enjoyed being around her and the entire family.
When I was 3-4 years old I fell off the dock at the lake and Aunt Doris dove into save me.
I will always be so grateful of her and will never forget her!
Praying for peace and solace for her children and the grands and great grands. Our Love Mark, Russell and Maggie

Doris was one of my most treasured friends at Springhill she wasn´t just a resident to me she was a treasure to have I am a cook at Springhill but started as a server when I first started there Doris was a bit intimidating but when I got to know here sue was amazing I lived to hear her stories. And she became my work grandma pretty much. But a lot of us staff were impacted by her and when we all heard she passed it broke our hearts. All the servers and cooks will miss her and all her friends as well.
