Doris was born Tuesday, March 15, 1938 in Rutherford County to the late Samuel Lowery and Cora Lee Wilkerson. She had a long and dedicated career at various places of employment which included Fiber Industries, as a cloth inspector at the J.C. Cowan Plant, helping with the education of special needs youth at ICC, for Rutherford County Public Schools as a bus driver and lunchroom manager at Proctor Elementary and Carver Elementary and in a support role for NASA during the space race in the 1960’s.She was a member of the Red Bow Tie Club at the ICC Foundation and had the distinction of being part the first Red Hat Society in the county. Doris was a past member of High Shoal Baptist Church where she faithfully served as the Green River Association Director of the WMU, a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School Director and choir member. She is currently a member of Floyd’s Creek Baptist Church where she was very active in several ministries. Doris loved traveling and had visited almost all fifty states. She enjoyed working in her yard and especially cherished the time she spent with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-three years, Bobby Gene Henson; ten siblings, Grace Holland, Lily Louise Swink, Bertie Spratt, Ruth Bailey, Mary Frances Lowery, James Lowery, Dewitt Lowery, Jack Lowery, Whitey Lowery and Dub Lowery.
Those left to treasure her memory include her son Ricky Henson and daughter, Tammy (Bobby) Adair all of Forest City; sister-in-law, Hazel Lowery of Ellenboro; grandchildren, Chad (Amanda) Adair, Shaun Henson, Todd (Jaime) Adair; great grandchildren, Kayla (Tanner) Green, Katelyn Crowe, Kaleb Adair, Chole Adair, Brailey Henson, Zayne Henson, Lily Adair; great-great grandchildren, Elena Jo Carr and Kase Carr.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Monday, March 18th at Floyd’s Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Carnell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.
Memorial donations are requested to the Parking Lot Fund at Floyd’s Creek Baptist Church, 2004 Chase High Road, Forest City, NC 28043.
