Doris Kay "Kim" Patterson Hughes was born September 19, 1939, in Scott County, Kentucky, to John Clifton Patterson and Carrie Butler Patterson. She was the fourth child of their five children. Doris was a graduate of Scott County High School. She attended Kentucky State University. Doris was a retiree of IBM in Lexington. She was later employed by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and Fayette County Schools.
Affectionately known as "Kim", she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at a young age and united with Great Crossing Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as an usher and member of the choir. She was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, and later became a member of Consolidated Baptist Church where she served as a greeter and member of the Women's Sunday School class. Doris was faithful in her attendance and service until she could no longer serve due to her health.
While attending Kentucky State University, Doris met and married her college sweetheart, Robert Morris Hughes. And of this union they were blessed with two children.
Doris, "Kim" was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was the caregiver for her family. Doris was caregiver to her husband, mother, brother, 3 sisters, and mother-in-law. When her health began to decline the family wanted her to slow down and take care of herself. They felt she was doing too much. Doris, "Kim" was determined to do what she wanted and she would decide when to slow down. Don't let her contagious smile and mild demeanor fool you. As petite as she was, she would stand her ground in a very humble and polite way. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Doris never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She was always extending her hand out to help someone. Doris had a loving and giving spirit. Two of her favorite Scriptures were, II Chronicles 7:14 and Matthew 6:33.
She transitioned this life into glory on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at her home. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillie Patterson Robinson, Alice Patterson Williams, two brothers, George Mason Patterson, and Edwin C. Lindsay, Sr.
Doris leaves to celebrate her life, her daughter, LaDonna (William) Smith, (Lexington, KY.) Michael (Lisa) Hughes (North Carolina); one grandson, Nigel (Cynthia) Smith, (Lexington, KY); one granddaughter, Kimberly Smith, (Lexington, KY); 3 great grandsons, Shaun Smith, (State College, PA); Eric Smith, (Lexington, KY); Da'Lan Smith, (Lexington, KY.) one great granddaughter, Za'Kari Bell, (Lexington, KY.) one sister, Ella Moore, (Lexington, KY);one sister-in-law, Cora Lindsay (Lexington, KY), Vera Henderson and John R. Patterson, cousins who were more like sister and brother, (Georgetown, KY.), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Doris "Kim" to know her was to love her. She loved and touched so many people in her lifetime which are too numerous to name who will truly miss her.Visitation will be Saturday November 1, 2025 from 10am-12pm with the funeral immediately following at Consolidated Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery Georgetown KY
