Doris Parker Obituary

Doris Jean Parker passed away on Tuesday November 25, 2025, in Lower Cape Fear Life Care and Services in Wilmington, NC following several months of declining health. She was born on Wednesday October 23, 1946, in Norfolk, VA and was the daughter of the late Peyton G. and Edna Mitchell Parker. She was a lifelong resident of Chesapeake, VA and for more than 25 years lived on Hartswood Terrace in the Bridgefield Section of Great Bridge. As her health declined, she moved to Hampstead, NC where she was cared for by her brother Harry P. Parker and his wife, Karen. Ms. Parker received a BA degree from Old Dominion University in 1977. She was a para legal for several private attorneys and served on congressional staff in the Federal Government. She was an avid reader and engaged especially in Virginia history. Doris enjoyed visiting ancestral lands, battlefields, and methodically pursued her family genealogy. She learned as a young child and diligently searched for supporting facts about her grandmother's claim of being a descendant of General Robert E. Lee but was unsuccessful. She did find consolation, however, to learn and share lesser ancestry discoveries. Ms. Parker was a long-time member of Good Hope United Methodist Church where she served as church organist. Christmas was Doris' favorite time. She could go overboard decorating, gifting, and making goodies for friends and family. She loved playing the special Christmas music for her beloved church. Doris was a member of Daughters of The American Revolution and United Daughters of The Confederacy. Doris had a great love for animals, especially horses and dogs. She kept and cared for both which brought joy to her throughout her life. She took up knitting for a time and gifted family and friends with sweaters and scarves that were far better than store purchased.

Her legacy will remain strong through her sister, Joyce Myers of Charlotte, NC and her brother, Harry P. Parker and his wife, Karen of Hampstead, NC; and finally, her four-legged companion, Maggie.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday Evening December 10, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Oman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322. The service to celebrate her life will be on Thursday December 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Mark Christian will officiate. Interment will be on the lot with her parents in Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. The family requests that contributions be made to the Chesapeake Humane Society, 149 New Mill Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23322. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.omanfh.com.
