Doris Marie Silverthorn, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025. She was 94.
Doris was born on September 8, 1930, in Quincy, Illinois, to Robert and Florence (Feld) Leindecker. She spent her early years in Quincy and Bradenton, Florida, and later attended the University of Minnesota. A proud graduate of Quincy High School, Class of 1948, she soon after relocated to Florida, where she met and married the love of her life, Philip Silverthorn, on July 10, 1951.
Doris worked for several banks in Manatee County, Florida, and also contributed her talents to local journalism, first at The Islander on Anna Maria Island and later at The Highlander newspaper in Highlands, North Carolina. After retiring in 1987, Doris and Philip moved to Scaly Mountain, North Carolina, where she found joy in volunteering at the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital for 13 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Philip Silverthorn (2000), and her son, Philip Silverthorn Jr. (2020), of Scaly Mountain, NC.
Her children lovingly remember Doris: Susan Silverthorn of Scaly Mountain, NC; Sheri Fannon of Bradenton, FL; and Gary Silverthorn of Bradenton, FL. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Nicole Mears (Fannon), James Fannon, Gary Silverthorn Jr., Kaitlyn Grosse (Silverthorn), Anna Maria Silverthorn, and Eva Silverthorn; and nine great-grandchildren: Sophia, Nicholas, Annaka, Mila, Ryker, Hazel, Raidyn, Kali, and Layla.
A devoted homemaker, Doris found her greatest joy in her family and the simple pleasures of life, such as camping, spending time outdoors, cooking, sewing, and quilting. Her warm heart,
adventurous spirit, and generous nature touched all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
